Welcome to Day 2
of the
Smeared & Smudged
31 Days of Halloween!
If you're just joining us this month be sure to check out Terra's blog for complete information on all of the prizes, scavenger hunts & other fun extras during this spooky month of October!
Today for a very special reason I choose to make a shadow box. You'll find out the significance of the Shadow Box project at the bottom of this post (so be sure to read it all!!).
Who better to honor during these 31 Days than....
The King of Halloween -
Edgar Allan Poe!
Once again I set to recycle something fun...
The base for this shadow box is a grungy cigar box with no lid that I bought at a flea market...I actually bought it for the goodies that were in it...not the box it's self. BUT being me, I couldn't bring myself to throw it away so I kept it for a "special project" - LOL!!
(You know you can always find one!)
It's filled with all sorts of goodies...
Edgar Allan Poe Books (printed off the net); A Bottle of Poison; Poe himself of course (image by Altered Pages); a stamped Title, Spider & Skeleton worshiping his master; a bit of funky black net and a fun skeletal candle.
Stamp Credits: Skeleton, Label, Spider - Alpha Stamps; "Halloween" - Just For Fun Rubber Stamps
Other: Poe - Altered Pages
Here is what the shadow box looks like with the candle "lit" and the lights off!
Pretty spooky cool huh????
Well, now why did I choose to make a Shadow Box today???
Recently I was pleasantly surprised to receive a copy of
Laura Childs newest book -
and in this book one
of the projects that Carmela creates in her charming French Quarter scrapbook store
is a Shadow Box!
It's time once again to join Carmela, Ava and the whole Memory Mine crew on another exciting journey as Carmela helps a friend in need solve a murder...or two...or more!
Yes, despite pleas from her sweetie Carmela's natural investigative instincts kick in and she finds herself right in the middle of the mayhem.
I don't want to give too much away but you'll have a hard time putting this book down from the get go. It won't matter if you're new to the Scrapbook Mystery series or if you feel like you're meeting old friends you're going to love this new chapter in the life of a scrapbook store and it's owner right in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans.
I am tickled to say that I am lucky to give away not one but TWO signed copies of this book!
To be entered to win all you have to do is post a comment telling me your favorite "project" beyond cards or scrapbook lay-outs. It might be a shadow box like today's project or maybe it's an altered tin; a canvas; Gothic Arch; ATC or ????
You have until October 15th to post your answer
(or e-mail it to me) to be entered in the drawing!
At that time I'll draw the two lucky winners using Random.org.
Good Luck Everyone
and
Happy Haunting!!
Awesome project and exciting giveaway! I am a huge Laura Child's fan. :) I think that altered wall canvasses and ATCs are my favorites
ReplyDeleteCool Poe shadow box! Love all the details you've packed in there. And that candle is so spooky light! My favorite project - clocks. I make clocks out of cigar boxes, tins anything. Some are painted or have fussy cut images bits of metal ...you never know what I'll use on my clocks. The book sound right up my mystery loving alley! Thanks for chance at one.
ReplyDeleteWell this is amazing! I would love to have one in my living room! Great job!
ReplyDeleteBesides cards and layouts I love ATC's and sometimes I just get an idea for an assemblage and off I go- usually altered boxes and shrines are my thing!
ReplyDeleteYikes Roni...that is one spooky shadowbox! That hand candle is too scary for words! I love making ATC's the most because they're small enough that I can try new techniques and not invest too much time and material cost!
ReplyDeleteSimply fabulous recycle box you made, looks amazinga and the candle is perfect with Poe! =)
ReplyDeleteHugs, Elenor
Wow!!! First off wonderful shadow box! Love how you added the skeleton in the corner. Secondly, wow on the giveaway! I love making jewelry out of scrapbooking supplies and ATC's too;).

ReplyDeleteLove the shadowbox! My favorite altered project is a jewelry box I decopauged with my favorite purple flower and fairy images. It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove the shadow box and your Halloween theme. I have 2 favorite projects that I have made in the past and both were designed by Club Scrap. One is a drop spine box, I love those for holding special gifts and the giftee gets 2 in one and the 2nd was their music box, which is another terrific gift item. Laura Childs is up there at the top of my favorite authors list, loving all of her mystery series. Hoping to hear I've one her latest. Thanks for the opportunity to win. Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteHi Roni! Love your Poe shadow box! My favorite recent project is an altered frame that I made using frozen charlotte dolls that were inspired by your blog. Here is a link to my post about it: http://www.shrinkingmimsy.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-one-with-serious-creep-factor.html. Have a fabulous Fall!
ReplyDeleteYour shadowbox is beyond amazing! Every detail just ROCKS and when it's lit...OMG! I've not heard of the book series but it sounds right up my alley. I adore 3D projects of all kinds but seem to be making a lot of wall hangings at the moment. Thanks for a chance to win. xxD
ReplyDeleteAlright! I enjoyed Cher last book. Right now my favorite thing to do is a mixed media canvas. I'm hooked!
ReplyDeleteRead an Adult book?? Gee...what's that like?
ReplyDeleteI will say if I am going to take time away from my all ready too little for my liking precious scrap time....Laura is about the only Author I'll be reading!! (because then it's inspiration!!) I would LOVE to read Laura's new book! Please put my name in the hat!
That Poe shadowbox is gorgeous. Thanks for taking a pic with the lights off! Looks so eerie and totally highlights the king of Halloween. Appreciate the fussy cutting and the thought and care that went into it. Wonderful!! I love creating 3D card stock items. Love the cutting and scoring and swearing when I accidentally sticky strip the wrong tab. Boxes of all sizes, bags, cars, animals, houses, etc. What you can create with paper/card stock dimensionally is so fun and so diverse. Thanks for awesome prize and I will have to check out this set of books.
ReplyDeleteI am an upcycler and recycler all the way. Presently I am working on some altered shoes (baby shoes) and yesterday picked up some very small felt witches hats.
ReplyDeleteI spent all summer reading cozy mysteries and will add this to my list!
You bring up French influence. Please join the Broomsticks on the Bayou blog party coming up in a couple weeks.
I to follow Laura, I usually make cards if I'm not scrapbooking. I really like your shadow box, they are such fun to make but I don't know what to do with them after. I don't have much room in my little house.
ReplyDeleteSorry Roni, got so excited about reading a book that didn't involve a Mouse and a cookie that I totally forgot to tell you how fabulous I thought your Shadow box was!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a candle like that! Was the hand holder bit a separate piece or part of it?
Seriously love the whole King of Halloween!! TFS girl!
This is one AMAZING shadow box!!! I love making them myself! Great how you incorporated so much in so little space!!!! My very favorite projects are altered tins!!!! I LOVE THEM! The book by Laura Child's looks AWESOME! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteYour shadow box is so fun - even the tiny skeleton! You've set quite a task for yourself to have something Halloween every day for 31 days, but I'll look forward to seeing them.

Will have to see if they have them in the library here.....
ReplyDeleteGreat shadow box, very spooky and fun. I love altered canvas
ReplyDeleteWOW! What a terrific job altering that cigar box - so many wonderful details. I find cigar boxes fun to use as a project base - one of my favorite projects was the haunted house I made from them last year.
ReplyDeleteRONIIIIIIIIIII!!!!! OH MY GOSH!!!!! I Loveeeee EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS!!!! LAWDY MERCY THIS IS FABULOUS!!!
ReplyDeleteRoni, I didn't have time to go through all the posts, but HAD to come see what my favorite Halloween aficiondo had created--and of course, it's AWESOME! Very fitting for the King of Halloween.
ReplyDeleteAnd how fun you have treats, too: my favorite project is making hand bound books.

Wow...this shadow box is awesome. Love your stamps and all the time and energy that went into making this delightful project.
ReplyDeleteYour shadow box is fabulous...love Poe too...and omg I NEED to win that book- I have read all of hers until this one...the scrapbooking ones, the ones at the tea shop I am about one-third through, and the Cackleberry club too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance!
Oh yeah, and my fave "other" project I have done is an alcohol ink decorated Dia De Los muertos candle holder!
ReplyDeleteI love what you have done with this shadow box. So creepy when you turn on the light. I haven't read any of the Scrapbook Mystery books, so I would love to get my hands on one. I guess my favorite things outside of card making and scrapbooking would have to be altered canvases. I have made a couple so far and love that I can keep adding until I like the way it turns out.
ReplyDeleteHi Roni! Thanks for a chance to win the Scrapbook Mystery book. You turned me on to them last year and I am hooked! My current favorite project which I am working on right now is my daughters wedding bouquet. I am making paper flower (TH tattered flowers) with old jewelry as their centers. Hope to have it done by the end of the month but the wedding is not until December. Have a great day.
ReplyDeletefavorite project....hmmm I'd have to say altering things...like Altoids tins and stuff like that. but I may bet into shadow boxes because this is awesome! and Poe is the king this is just perfect! and I have the perfect place for it ;) awesome idea thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLove your shadow box! Love it even more with the candle lit :) That book sounds right up my ally, I haven't read any of her work before. My favorite project besides cards would have to be ATCs, but I'm learning to love journal pages too :)

ReplyDeleteNow that we have a new vintage store in our city...The Pape Collage in AZ, I have been having fun with vintage projects. Making ATC cards and HOLDers and trading with other friends. ALso an ART Journal Book is hwere I keep my samples of tags and ATC cards .I'd love to win the book.
ReplyDeleteThis is my absolute FAVORITE of your 31 days so far! FANTASTIC! I want it to sit next to my altered Poe book! Like you, I love to alter things & tend to gravitate towards the Altoid Tins when working on stuff like this. I have made simple tins to hang, girlfriend tins for friends & even tiny books in the tin! Love them! TFS this awesome project! PS Love Laura Childs' books, although I haven't picked one up in a while! :)
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your art and tutorials, and of course, that mystery sounds exciting. I'm not much of a stamper, and I don't scrap at all, but p;ease don't count me out because I'm a true mixed media artist.
