More Gecko Galz Challenges for August

As I mentioned in my last post I have been playing along with the challenges at Gecko Galz blog for a while now. Each month they have a theme which I shared in my previous post but they also have several other challenges where GG provides a specific image and you create a project using that image.

Here is what I made for these challenges....

The image for the card challenge...I just LOVE the blue - she's beautiful don't you think?

A very pretty image for the Christmas challenge - I used a few bits from my stash including the lovely Dresden trim. It's been in my collection for such a long time - it's great to put it to use.

The dragon is the Fantasy challenge image. It's so funny because I had JUST seen this funny quote on FB recently and knew it would be the perfect addition. The witch is from "The Witches" collage set.

The 3 little ghosts on a swing is the Gothic challenge image. You all know how much I LOVE Halloween. Well I couldn't pass up this chance to make a decoration for my favorite holiday. I made this altered 3D decoupage canvas - it's got 4 different layers which doesn't show up real well but.....

They do show up better in the dark when you turn on the tiny fairy lights I have hidden inside!!!
I am so excited about this piece - it is so much fun, I can't wait to display it this Halloween.

It's hard to get "dark" pics of it but I hope you can get the spooky "effect" I was going for.

Finally my take on the Steampunk challenge image. She was so very pretty and I choose to emphasize the blue in the image with the addition of blue inks and sequins to make her pop.

Hope you have enjoyed my take on these fun collage challenges.

Baby Things....

Happy Day Friends

I hope you all survived Thanksgiving and Black Friday.
We had a nice Thanksgiving with family and didn't even attempt any Black Friday shopping. I can't stand crowds on a good day much less on a day where everyone is crazy with the day after Thanksgiving sales. I do about 98% of Christmas shopping on line - it's quite, calm and best of all - no people pulling things out of my hands :)  LOL!!!

It's not often I get to make things for/related to babies so recently it was a nice challenge. The lady that heads up the Craft Therapy program at our local library adopted a sweet little guy recently, her first class back Mom and I gave her a few gifts.

I wanted to make something that they could hang in his room now and that he could enjoy later on in the future so I made this...

I used Creative Medium to adhere bits from a map of Indiana.

As it turns out she loves Scrabble so spelling his name out in the tiles was perfect.

I added some keys...as he holds the keys to his parents hearts!
These are a die from Gina Marie Designs. Love how intricate they are and since they were cut from Rinea Foiled Papers they really look like they are metal.

I made this card to go along with. I used Rinea Foiled Papers for the background, pin and sentiment. The dies are all from a set by MFT.

It's fun to step out of the norm and create something a bit different.
Have you had the opportunity to create for a little one recently?

Supplies:

Rinea Foiled Papers - Sapphire/Gold Glossy, Sapphire/Sapphire Starstruck; Silver/Gold Glossy; Turquoise/Turquoise Starstruck, Ruby/Gold Glossy
Imagine - Creative Medium, VersaFine Clair - Blue Belle, Sponge Daubers
Gina Marie Designs - Key, Heart
MFT - Baby sentiment, Pin, Diaper dies

BlackBerry Desings - Project #1 - Altered Glasses Case

Hi All...

First ~ before I get to the project I wanted to share this pic. of Graber!  He likes to hang with me in my studio but couldn't find a comfy place to sleep so I bought him this little dog bed....he loves it!  He sleeps while I create :)

Graber's new Bed
Great Give-A-Way #2!!

When I was rummaging around trying to decide what projects to make using the BBD papers I found this plastic pink eye glasses case that I had bought at one point for something....what that is I can't tell you now but it looked like perfect fodder for something crafty!

I paired it with this great Marie Antoinette collage sheet printed on tissue paper...

BlackBerryDesigns Pt I 002

Since the label had a nice space in the center I decided to stamp my nieces name using Archival Ink.

BlackBerryDesigns Pt I 003
Next I trimmed it from the sheet....

BlackBerryDesigns Pt I 004
Then proceeded to glue it down on the lid of the case using Aleene's Collage Pauge collage medium. Yes, I am using my fingers again ;) (can you believe how perfectly that label fit onto the case?!?!)

BlackBerryDesigns Pt I 005
When it was glued down I wiped off the excess glue around the edges of the image and set it aside to dry.

BlackBerryDesigns Pt I 008
Here is what it looks like at this point.... A bit plain for my taste....

BBD 002
So, I decided to bling it up a bit with some Stickles!

BBD 003 BBD 007 BBD 008

Now, you can seal it with a light coat of Acrylic sealer after the stickles has dried paying attention to the edges for extra protection.

NOW ~

It's time for another BlackBerryDesigns give-a-way...

Check out the

section and tell me which sheet(s) you like the best...

I have to be honest here...this one is very tough for me.  I LOVE the vintage ads (107 &114) BUT, I have a thing for hats!  I love hats and so wish they would come back in style.  I really like the vintage hats with the net, feathers, sequins, etc. That is always one of the things I gravitate towards when we go to a flea market or antique mall ~ hats!

Now it's your turn!

You will have until  5-25  to post your comment to be entered into the drawing to win one of 5 sets of Blackberry Designs collage sheets!

Good Luck Everyone!!!

Vintage Easter 3D Collage - Upcyled Reese's Packaging!!

Yes, you read that right....I'm upcycling (I still can't get used to that term) a Reese's Easter packing for my next project!  My son was shopping at Wal-Mart the other day and saw that Reese's had a pretty large Easter Egg treat and bought me one because he knew how much I LOVE them.

Well, when I pulled the egg out of this package I KNEW I was going to make something out of it.  It was just too perfect not to use!  Of course I had to eat the egg first - LOL!!

Which brings me to a question I rec'd the other day.  Mandy e-mailed asking why I tend to use so many packaging products or what other people call trash in my art.  I know many people think I'm on a "Green" kick but to be perfectly honest that's not the reason at all....I am proud to say I'm a pack-rat!  I have been for as long as I can remember ~ I had notes from friends in Kindergarten (until mom sold my childhood jewelry box that is) but it's not trash in my eyes, it's potential art.    I can see the hidden beauty in just about anything so why not use it.  I find it much more challenging and rewarding to turn what some might consider garbage into art.  I guess it's just my "thing".

Anyway, this is the plastic packaging the egg came in....

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 001

We're only going to be using the larger "egg" section but don't throw away the back section, we'll do something with that next week ;)

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 002

The first think I did was to trim off a big hunk of the upper portion of the plastic then did a finer cut around the egg shape leaving about .25" edge around the upper egg shape.  I didn't cut any of the bottom portion away because this will turn into the stand area and part of the collage.

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 004

Here it is standing up....

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 005

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 006

The first thing I did was to paint the inside of the egg with a coat of gesso.  This will get rid of the "slippery" factor you get with plastic and it also gives a nice tooth for any medium that will follow.

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 007

While the gesso is drying I tore up a page from an old dictionary.  You could use any book page, pattern paper, tissue paper, napkins, etc.  Whatever tickles your fancy.

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 008

One thing I did want to mention about pages from books.  They usually have a white margin around the entire page.  I normally tear this blank area off and discard it.  The whole point is the using the text.

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 010

After the gesso is dry, I set a few large washers in the base.  I did so for a couple reasons.  First, it helps stabilize the egg while I'm working on the top part and second I will glue them in permanently a bit later to stabilize the actual collage.
Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 011

Now it's time to start gluing the page pieces into the egg.  I like to use Collage Pauge from Aleene's.  I've tried all sorts and find it works great.  It's readily available at most craft stores, averaged priced, cleans up easy and is nice to work with.  You of course can use whatever glue you like.
Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 012

I apply one piece at a time and smooth it around all of the humps and bumps in the packaging.

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 015

Once you've covered the upper egg portion, remove the washers and cover the interior of the base with paper.  I also add a piece over each stack of washers.
Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 016

Then I glue the washers to the bottom of the base.  It's now time to let the entire piece dry.  Depending on temps, humidity, amount of glue used, etc. it may take a while.
Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 017

While the glue is drying I printed several Altered Pages collage images I will be using in the collage.  Notice the large sheet is a full size sheet of collage images printed half size.  I also digitally clipped, re sized and printed two additional images that will be the main focus of the collage.

Whenever I use images that I print myself I always seal them with Micro Glaze.  It makes inks, paints, etc. waterproof and permanent.  Super important when working with wet mediums such as glues, inks, paint, etc.

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 019

I know it may seem expensive but trust me a very tiny dab will do.  The small images are approx. 2" square and to cover each image is simply touch my finger tip to the Micro Glaze.  That's all you need for an image this size.   I've had this same tiny jar for 4 years and it's still more than half full!

Vintage Easter Collage w Recycled Candy Package 020

After you have covered each image you need to let the Micro Glaze dry completely.

Since I'm waiting on everything to dry we'll pick it up here tomorrow!
So, that means you have time to run out and buy one or two of the Giant Reese's Eggs....
For the packaging of course...
and if you can't bring yourself to eat the egg it's self,
I know someone in Indiana who'd be happy to help you out there ;)

Vintage Crepe Paper - Storage???

Hi All ~

I have to tell you about an awesome buy I got last week.  Ds, his girlfriend and I went to a not so local antique mall.  Much of it is hand made craft items, figurines, plates, etc. with a few real antiques sprinkled in here and there.  There is a section though that is called their flea market which actually has more antiques than the rest of it.

I was lucky enough to stumble upon a box FULL of vintage crepe paper.  Most of it is Dennison crepe paper with a few other mfg. thrown in.  (Dennison is the maker of those vintage red/white labels everyone is crazy for).    Check out the awesome art deco package in the center...there are several like this with different color flowers (the flowers are the color of the crepe paper inside!).  VERY cool...  The color name is actually dry embossed into the bottom of the package.

Vintage Crepe Paper 005

Some of this stuff is REALLY old...I'm thinkin the 20's - 30's by the graphics.  What amazes me is that it is still in perfect usable condition!  The colors haven't faded, it's not brittle, etc.  I am so excited because I finally had a chance to go though it and not only did I find tons of crepe paper,

Vintage Crepe Paper 006

I found bits of vintage colored cellophane....

Vintage Crepe Paper 002

Something termed Velvet Crepe Paper...  I've never seen any crepe paper that compares to this.  It is so tightly compressed it actually feels like velvet.  It's amazing, I wish they still sold it.

Vintage Crepe Paper 004

I also found three completed vintage flowers and a few patterns!  I don't want to take them apart but I am going to try to come up with my own flowers using these as inspiration.  Hopefully you'll see them in the near future.

Vintage Crepe Paper 001

I now have a nice big pile of the wrappers/packages.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them.  The really old ones with the art deco graphics would be cool framed and the others are just too cool not to use for something.  I just have to figure out what that something is.
Vintage Crepe Paper 007

I do need to figure out how to store this stuff though.
The crepe paper is 20" long so it's a bit larger than average.
Any ideas?

So, as a result of my way cool find, in the near future you'll probably be seeing quite a few crepe paper projects :)
