So Blue....

Rinea recently released a brand new variety pack of their foiled papers...can you guess what it is???  Shades of Blue!!!

You all know how much I LOVE blue so this has instantly become my new favorite!  The colors included are Turquoise, Sapphire, Cobalt and the newest color Midnight Dark Blue. Stunning each of them.

I made this fun origami wall art piece using each color in the variety pack. It is such a dimensional and striking piece in person...I wish you all could see it in person.

Origami Koi Fish using Rinea Foiled Papers

Hello Friends, I hope this day finds you well and happy.  Today I wanted to share some fun origami Koi fish I made recently using Rinea Foiled Papers....

These are my Koi!  They are so much fun to make and the foiled papers make it so easy to shape and pose these little creatures. They would make great party decor, mobiles, and more. All you need are a few sheets of foiled paper and these instructions: Easy Koi. 

To create the various sizes just increase or decrease using the same ratio. The video uses a 2" x 3" piece of paper. I used a 4x6 for the large Koi in Marigold/Marigold Starstruck, the Copper/Copper Starstruck Koi was made using a 2x3" and the Jade/Jade Starstruck Koi fish was created using a 2.5" x 3.5".

They really are so much fun to make...I'll bet you can't stop at just one!

Origami Sea Life...Whales!

Hello Friends - Recently Rinea added a new color of foiled paper - Cobalt! You all know how much I love blue.  Well that color sparked an idea...actually several. The color reminded me of some lovely photos of whales that I had seen recently so I thought it might be fun to try and make a few of my own. So I set about searching YouTube for some origami whales and this is what I came up with...

These were so much fun to make!

Just a note - you can make any of these whales in a variety of sizes - all you have to do is change the size of the square of foiled paper that you begin with. The large flat whale was made using an 8x8" square, the two smaller 3D whales were made using a 6x6" piece of foiled paper.

The first big guy is a flat whale that would work great on cards, in scrapbooks, on signs or banners, etc.  The video to create this whale can be found here - Whale #1

The next origami whale reminds me a bit of a humpback whale. The great part about using foiled paper is that you can actually pose your creations with ease. I bent the flippers around so that they held the whale off the table just a bit.  Another benefit of using the foiled paper for origami is that you don't have to work so hard at creases and making the paper hold it's shape. The nature of foiled paper takes care of that with little effort.  This whale can be found here - Whale #2. 

The final whale I have to share with you looks like a sperm whale - imo.  It is different from most origami that I have made as it actually cuts the tail apart to create this look. The foil has again allowed me to pose him just so.  The video for making this origami whale is here - Whale #3.  You will notice if you watch the video that I positioned his tail and flippers a bit differently than what he did in the video.  I wanted mine to stand on it's own and look more 3D than his.

Just a note about using the foiled paper for origami. Many times in origami some folds are opened and closed quite often. This may expose the white paper center of the foil in the form of tiny cracks. When this happens, once you have finished all of the folding simply run a marker over the creases to hide the cracking. Works like a charm.

I hope you all are having a nice week so far...

Today I wanted to share my origami turkey...actually it's something called modular origami. Modular origami is where you fold individual pieces then assemble them all into one complete project.

And here he is...

My Thanksgiving turkey!!

He could be part of a center piece or he could be made for individual place settings. Either way he's sure to garner ooohhhh's and aaaahhhh's. 

He looks far more difficult to make than it really is, mostly it's fan folds for the tail and his body starts off like a paper airplane so it's really quite easy.  I found that the folding was somewhat relaxing because it's just back and forth.

Adding a place setting is easy as well - just a couple of die-cuts and writing down the names is all it takes.

Stamp - Carmen's Veranda

The next example is a stamped panel using StazOn inks. 

It really takes stamping so well.

This is a fun technique for this paper. 

It is a piece of foiled paper that has been heated to the point that it puffs up!

I simply held the heat tool over the paper, heating up sections and all of a sudden it started to puff up. Once it cools off you get those cool wrinkles here and there while other areas stay a bit puffy. It's really a very cool look IRL. Very dimensional with all that texture.

Finally I have another die-cut flower - this time a carnation diecut was used to cut these petals. I thought it would be fun to use the Silver/Silver Starstruck Foiled Papers for a change. I love how you can krinkle the petals up like a carnation and they hold their shape.  Another one you've just got to see IRL to get the full impact.

This is Rinea Foiled Papers #3

Welcome to Day 3 of my introduction of 

Rinea Foiled Papers

And here are today's examples....

The first example is a lovely Hyacinth made using the 3D Hyacinth Diecut Set. It cuts both the flower portion as well as the frilly leaves.  The foiled paper is cut then wound around a core - I used a paper straw but of course you could use a wood dowel rod, skewer, toothpick or whatever you have on hand.  These are lovely when presented in a bouquet.

The diecuts are also useful in other applications as you will see in the coming days :)

For this example I cut strips of the foiled papers to create my very own pattern on the lovely Blush background. You can create any number of patterns by cutting the papers to various widths and affixing them to your project.  So easy yet very striking.

I choose Marigold Foiled Paper to show you how amazing these papers look when used in the deep impression embossing folders. The folders really bring out the beauty of these papers as they create their own shadows and highlights from the play of light over the embossing.

Just as the foiled papers are great for origami they work equally as well with Tea Bag Folding as demonstrated here on this pretty star design. I made a large silver star that was topped with the Sapphire and Turquoise star.

This is Rinea Foiled Paper - Part 2

Happy Monday!

I'm back with another post sharing the amazing goodness of 

Rinea Foiled Papers!

These are today's inspiration squares!

My first bit of inspiration is how cute these papers look cut into tiny shreds!

They make an amazingly happy bit of flash for any project don't you think?
The "hooray" piece shows how cool the smooth/glossy foil looks next to the starstruck foil.  It's a lovely contrast don't you think?  The sentiment is also a diecut using the Ebony/Gold Glossy Foiled Paper.

I wanted to share this example to show how beautiful it is when paired with delicate, highly detailed diecuts. All of those tiny little swirls come out perfectly.

This is to show how well the foiled papers take other mediums.
This is Metallic Luster from DecoArt. Of course you wouldn't want to cover the entire piece, this is just to show how well it works with the medium.

This is the first of several origami pieces I will be sharing.  This butterfly was made using Ruby/Gold Glossy Foiled Papers. This particular design shows off both the front Ruby and back Gold of the papers.  It really pops on the Silver/Gold Glossy Foiled Paper don't you think?

Magical Origami

Happy Day my Ink Stained Friends!

Today I am thrilled to share a bit of origami with you all.  If you have visited before you know I like to dabble with origami from time to time and I wanted to share how perfect Rinea's foiled papers are for this fun paper art.

If you recall I mentioned a couple weeks ago that Rinea released a few new variety packs this month - Misfits, Patriotic and Magical...which is what I want to share with you today.

Aren't they adorable???  I am so excited at how they turned out.

I searched for a good pattern/video for Mickey for quite some time - 

there are lots of them out there but very few actually turn out looking like THE Mouse. 

I stumbled upon this video and gave it a try...

I am so happy I did, he turned out so cute and it was easy to switch a few things up to turn it into Minnie.

He was made using Ebony/Glossy Gold Foiled Paper and Ruby/Ruby Starstruck Foiled Paper from the Magical Foiled Paper Variety Pack and Silver/Glossy Gold Foiled Paper. His eyes, nose, mouth and buttons were all free hand cut (which is really easy). 

Minnie was made using the same instructions from the video above but I did change the dimensions a bit when folding to give her a slightly different look.  I also cut her features a bit differently from Mickie's.

You'll also notice that I gave Minnie her iconic red bow.  This is another tricky piece of origami which believe it or not I had more trouble with than the mouse!  I finally figured it out and I'm glad I did because it's the perfect finishing touch for her don't you think?

Hypno Origami Wall Art Instructions

Yesterday I shared my "Hypno" origami wall art piece with you...today I'm going to show you step by step instructions on how to recreate the origami pieces needed to make one of your own.

Instructions:

Tip - It's best to use text weight papers for origami because there are so many folds and creases.  I've made origami pieces using cardstock weight papers before and let me tell you after all of the creases and folds your fingers get very tired and sore.

1. Cut your paper into squares - the size depends on how large you want your finished piece to be.  I am using 4" pieces of paper for the example above.

2. Fold your paper into quarters and open up.

3. Fold one side towards the center and crease (leave closed).

4. Rotate your paper and fold the other side so it meets in the center, crease and leave closed.

Your paper is now divided into 2 halves at the center point by one of the original creases.  We will be working on each half separately from here on out.

4. Fold one corner of the smaller box toward the center fold line and crease. 

5. Open up that crease.

6. Rotate your paper, fold the second corner over toward the center fold line and crease.

7. Open up that fold and you have now made an invisible "X" on that side of your paper.  I put dash marks to help you visualize the folds we just made.

8. Rotate your paper and repeat the fold and crease to create the "X" on the second half of your paper.

Your paper should now have a creased "X" on each side of the fold line as shown above.

9. Tuck one corner under on opposite sides - one on each end as shown.

I have placed 2 small "X"s on the parts we will be working with next.

10. From the back side, push these sections towards the center.

11. Pinch these two pieces together.

12. Tuck them under the previously folded under triangle.

You should now have a folded pyramid on half of your paper as shown.

Here's the top view of the pyramid.

13. Rotate your paper to work on the other end of the piece.

14.  Push the two pieces towards the center; pinch and 

15. Tuck under the previously folded triangle.

You now have a boat!

16. Find the center fold that we made at the very beginning of it all - pinch the two pyramids together as shown above and below.

17. Let go of the pyramids and place them flat on your work surface....  You're done!  You now have one piece of your origami wall art puzzle.

18. Repeat this process 6 (for the smaller pieces) or 27 (for the larger piece) or as many times as needed depending on how big you want your wall art to be!  I know it sounds like quite a bit of work but really it IS worth it in the end.

Now as far as sizes go, I've made you a little comparison to show how big things get as you increase in size.  The smallest piece was made with a 4" square and measures 3.5" from tip to tip; the center piece was made using a 6" square and measures 5.25" from tip to tip.  The largest was what they used in the original piece I found - 8.5" square and measures 7.5" from tip to tip.  I can't imagine how big their finished piece was when they got done with it....must have taken up a whole wall!

Now I also wanted to show you why I liked using the Hypno paper for this project.  The paper itself has a very cool collage feel to it...lots of text, images and graphic design elements as well as multiple colors on each page.  This design paired with the pyramid form gives you something new to look at at every angle....  The photo above and the two consecutive pictures are different angles of the large piece. As you can see when you change your perspective the piece takes on a totally new look.

So much fun rolled up into one piece of art.
