Tim Holtz Distress Inks - New vs. Old

Actually, not really a "vs." type of thing....

more like old compared to new.

So, I inked & stamped a bunch of tags using the old colors and the new colors just to show how varied the colors are. There are a couple new colors that I just L*O*V*E and some that are just o.k....very close to old colors but maybe after I use them a bit I'll like them more.

Anyway, here we goooooo.....

Tim Holtz Distress Ink

New vs Old

Color Comparison

(going at this the old ROYGBIV style)

(New colors have a blue splat on them.)

New = Spun Sugar, Victorian Velvet & Barn Door

Old = Tattered Rose, Worn Lipstick, Fired Brick & Aged Mahogany

New = Rusty Hinge

Old = Dried Marigold & Spiced Marmalade

New = Wild Honey

(I actually debated about adding this to the orange family as it is very close to orange but it fits well here as well. It's a nice compliment to the two original colors of yellow.)

Old = Scattered Straw & Mustard Seed

New = Bundled Sage, Crushed Olive & Forest Moss

Old = Shabby Shutters, Peeled Paint & Pine Needles

New = Pumice Stone

So, what do you think of the new colors vs. the old?

Any new favorites?

I have 3 new favorites which I think are must haves....

Blue Sapphire

(OMG ~ simply awesome color of blue)

Crushed Olive

(isn't that such an interesting color...lots of potential)

Barn Door

(yes, believe it or not a red must have color ;) LOL!!)

The colors I wasn't sure about are....

Victorian Velvet, Tumbled Glass & Stormy Sky

They are all very similar to another color in the same group...I can just about make those colors using the Ink Blending Tool and more/less layers of ink.

Be sure to let us know what you think!

Have a great day!!

  1. Thank you for doing swatches, I've been wondering how they compare to the old ink. This is great.

  2. I really like the Pumice Stone. All the colors are nice though..old as well as new.

  3. Oh Heck Roni -

I think I like them all - LOL! But I really like the tags you made up. I think I may do something like that so I have a visual of the colors when I'm working on something. You know, a little swatch sample!

  4. I have a few of the new ones & my favorites are bundled sage & rusty hinge.

  5. Thanks for doing the comparison. I pre-ordered the new colors but haven't had a chance to play with them since they arrive Thursday - maybe tomorrow! :)

  6. Thank you Roni---I will have to order online so I appreciate the samples. Will you please share the difference in making the doubles of each color?...Thanks again!!

  7. Thanks you for your! I only have the old one, but I must have the new one.
    I love your tags too.
    Have a nice day too.

  8. Thanks for posting, it really helps in chosing the new colours. In addition to the ones mentioned by you I also like Rusty Hinge very much.

  9. Reason for muliple photos of some of the color groups ~ I took one large pic of the colors so you could see them all together and the other photos are larger images so you could get a closer look at each tag. If you click on the image to take you to Flickr you can then click on the larger or original image and it will blow it up even bigger for a closer look.

  10. I love the crushed olive! Looks alot like the color of my living room :) Also love the Stone gray color. Very nice!

  11. I just received my new color set the other day and spent all of yesterday playing with them. I did a cute swap piece using rusty hinge and aged mahgoney. I love all the colors:D

  12. Oh this IS wonderful! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Rusty Hinge, and Barn Door!

  13. It's really nice to see them all together. Of the ones I want to buy, the new ones are Rusty Hinge, Wild Honey, Chipped Sapphire, Forest Moss and Pumice Stone. They are really beautiful!! Thanks for the swatches!

  14. I LOVE them all ... I know that is a weak and cowardly answer ... but tis true all the same :0)

  15. thank you for doing this Roni..
I definitely need Crushed Olive may be Bundled sage and I love rust but think it's too orangy.
That wild Honey and Spiced marmalade look almost the same to me.

see... I don't need them all. 9 I keep on telling myself)

  16. I am lovin' the Crushed Olive and the Forest Moss. They are beautiful Greens!

  17. I tend to go for the brighter colors plus the pumice stone

  18. I want them all .... great swatches! Thanks for sharing!

  19. Thank you so much for displaying these so well! I've never seen them all laid out like that. I think all of the new colors have perfectly filled in all the 'gaps' of Distress color shades. I am very excited about the blues, pinks, greens...actually I am very excited about everything! There is not one that I don't like.

  20. Thank you so much for posting these color comparisons.

  21. My favorites from his "old" collection are tea dye and vintage photo. 3 from the new collection that will have to be added to mine stash are mustard seed, forest moss, and crushed olive

  22. Thanks so much for showing us all the new colors against the old! I know that the new colors won't be coming to my local Michaels for some time.
For some reason, Pumice Stone is just calling to me! I love it's cool neutral tone. Also the Chipped Sapphire and Rusty Hinge! Love that deep, rich orange of the Rusty Hinge. I used to shy away from orange and yellow but am loving it lately!

  23. I love all the new colors, but if I were to chose the ones that stand out to me.....they would be Rusty Hinge,Wild Honey,Forest Moss, Chipped Sapphire, and Barn Door. The comparison tags was a wonderful idea in helping to determine what to purchase next. Looking forward to the Akron show. Look for the grey-haired lady with the bow in her hair!

  24. Thank you soooo much for posting this! Been searching the web trying to get good views of the colors. This has helped me a LOT!

  25. Thanks for all the effort in showing the colours!
I love the new Sapphire, rusty hinge and the Crushed olive!
makes the decision easier seeing them on tags!

Thanks for your thoughts and comments!
