Blog Bash Give-A-Way #5 - Altered Book Shapes

Woo Hoo!!

I just got back from my Dad's house and I am so excited!!!!!

I wanted a shaped altered book but didn't want to pay someone 6-15.00 or wait for a month to get it. So I thought about all of his wood working stuff and hoped he might have some sort of machine to cut me one :)

WELL....I went over and we gave it a try...

......AND IT WORKED!!!!!!!!

I am so stoked!! He is retiring in a couple of weeks and has been thinking about various projects to keep him busy. Well, we talked about it and I think I might even have him talked into trying to make some to sell if there is interest. I think it would be great for him...he'd get to work with the tools he loves in addition to making way cool things I (and others) can use :)

So here you go....what do you think????

  3. OMG! That is so cool! Count me in if dad decides to take up this new hobby. I even have a collection of cool old books that I got from library sales that would be perfect for this. He/you could offer the option of cutting a book someone mails you for that purpose, yes?

Shapes... hmm... I love the heart and house. I bet those would be the most popular shapes, plus they are nice and simple. How about star, circle or tree? Fun!

  12. Very cool! And how cool for your dad! I think a puzzle piece shape would be pretty cool. I personally haven't altered any books (even though I keep buying them!) but I think a puzzle piece would be interesting. Could maybe be a theme on putting the pieces of your life together. Just a thought.

  13. How funny that your dad was able to use his woodworking tools to cut shaped books! That makes perfect sense!!
The house and the heart are great, but I also like the idea of a half-circle or a triangle shape!

  14. What a great idea! I'm thinking butterfly or crown shapes.

  15. Other shapes... Half a star that opens to a full star, half a dog bone that opens full... Half butterfly (that would be REAL nice), half of a simple snowflake, christmas tree, snowman, maple leaf, baby bottle (this would be great with a child's book to use as a baby album), did you do perfectly round (I can see half a clock face), cat face.... Well I could keep going on and on but I'll stop now...

  16. The first shape to pop into my mind was a tree shape - like a Christmas tree. Or how about a mug? Oh, how about letters - or would that be too hard to cut out the centers of them? I think this is such a great idea! I'm not sure what to do with one - I've seen finished ones that were really cool. Best of luck with whatever you guys decide to do!

  23. I like the idea of a human head shape -- male or female. It could be filled in in a number of wild ways. Also,I'm thinking of a full female body, like a clothed deco-Erte shape, with the arms out like a model turning in a 30s fashion show. The shape of a map of a country would work well for a travel journal.

  24. Love all the ideas! A hand shape would be cool, or a half champagne or wine bottle? So clever!

  25. Great idea! I agree with the other posts - they all are great ideas, trees, arrows, ovals, a bird shape. Not sure how sophisticated the designs can be with thick books, but worth a shot! Cupcakes are hot right now i've noticed. Or owls.

  28. So cool!!! Another great idea, Roni! Love it!!

How about stars + maybe moons? You could also do this with children's board books. :) And acrylic? Tell your dad to have fun!! Can't wait to see more of what you come up with. :)

  29. How about a cat? You could also try letters of the alphabet...some are harder than others.

  32. Wow you could do anything. I think a monogram letter would be awesome and I bet a drill with a large bit would work for the holes in them. A star would be cool too...Maybe I should take some books to my grandpas wood shop LOL. I just love altered books!!!!!

  33. Wow they are incredible - what a brilliant idea - I love them bothbut should I win :):):) would prefer the heart one.

I think a fab book would be suitcase shaped then it could be filled with all sorts of holiday memorabalia.

Another could be candle shaped - weddings/christenings/special birhdays etc etc.

Please pick me!!!!! I'm UK based though so maybe that would be a problem

    Thanks for the inspiration anyway

    hugs

  35. Roni,
These shaped books are great and what fun that you might have found something for your Dad to do. I love the house book especially. My suggestions would be for a tag or bird shape.

  36. i would love to have an umbrella type of book! that way, you would put so much colors there and with the handle, surely a piece to alter too!

  37. Wow! I am lovin' the heart book. I can think of so many uses for this. Dang, your dad is one talented man. The only other shape I can think of is a Venti cup of coffee;kind of like the ones they sell at starbucks or a mug of coffee or cocoa. Oh yeah, how about a dachshund or a Christmas tree for Christmas, a bat for Halloween, or a butterfly for spring. Oh my goodness, I just have a ton of ideas. If you want more just e-mail me.
    Good luck all~Timna

  38. Wow, this seems like such a great idea!!

I think stairs would look awesome, you open the book and it would either go upwards or downwards.
Or maybe an angel because everyone needs someone to watch over them.

This is was fun,Thanks so much [:

  39. What a great idea! It looks like most of my ideas have already been mentioned (arrow, star, tree, and crown). I have to go with crown because we all tend to wear one at least sometime every day (or every month-um, maybe devil horns would be more appropriate!)
That's just my take on it.
I would love to win one though (no matter what shape)
