Happy Wednesday Everyone!
As I mentioned a few days ago I was asked to be a Visiting Artist this month over at
Gingersnap Creations Challenge Blog.
The theme this month is Machines with an emphasis on Steampunk which I adore so here goes....
The first challenge of the month is a Theme challenge and it is: On the Road.
Below is my Steampunk, Machine inspired collage:
Road Trip
And here are each of the individual little collage's close up....
Most of the items used for the collage are pieces that I collected from my FIL (green car tag, vintage Federal Use Tax Coupon; vintage driving goggles); my husband (toy cars from his childhood; the large sprockets/gears on top & crown nut); and my youngest son (vintage spark plug & model tires) and some of my own bits (game pieces, keys, clock parts, old upholstery tacks) making it a very personal piece.
I also used a vintage map to line the entire box,
some older Tim Holtz Design Originals paper to line a few of the individual sections,
Tissue Tape (TH),
Map Tape (Heidi Swapp),
Golden Bronze Paint (to paint the vintage map),
Distress Ink to age some areas,
Adirondack Acrylic Dabber to paint the insides of a couple of the boxes;
plus a few stamped and collage images to help finish it off.
The entire collage is created inside a Configurations box from Tim Holtz's Ideaology line of goods. Now you might notice that some of the individual boxes/spaces are larger than they should be and you'd be correct. The beauty of these boxes is that you don't HAVE to use each box for it to work.
I chose not to use boxes in the two large corner areas (UL, LR) because I had items that were larger than any of the boxes that came with the set. In one area leaving out a box wouldn't work so I had to improvise. I created a large box to fit my ephemera (right center with the vintage green auto tag) by cutting the ends off of two boxes and reassembling them with an extra bit of chipboard. Since it was painted and papered you can't even tell there were alterations to the original.
I now have several extra boxes that I am going to use to create a free-form shadowbox collage when the mood strikes!
So, if you've been thinking about giving the Configurations Shadowboxes a try but you weren't sure if you could make em work here is your chance!
To celebrate being a Gingersnap Visiting Artist for the month of July I am giving away a 5.5 x 5.5 Configurations Mini Shadow Box to one lucky winner!
To be entered to win simply post a comment below telling us what theme you'd like to use if you won this shadowbox!
You have until 7-27 to post your reply to be entered into the contest!
Good Luck Friends!!!
Vintage Sewing Items! I love your configurations box especially the little cars. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
ReplyDeleteLove your piece. If I won, I would use things that remind me of Alaska. I have been there 4 or 5 times and have family there and I simply LOVE the place.
ReplyDeleteOh,my! Your "on the road" box is awesome! What a fabulous job you did collecting all the right treasures. I could look at it all day!
ReplyDeleteFABULOUS JOB Roni!! Love looking at Configuration boxes!
ReplyDeleteI think I would do a "Things we did this summer" box for my little gal! Like a time capsule! :)
Thanks for a shot to win!
What an outstanding piece of work! Amazing! If I were to win a config box I'd dedicate it to the military members of my family. Okay, so a small one wouldn't hold everything but you have to start somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI want a beach vacation in a box and a nature inspired (florals, butterflies, etc.) in a box.
ReplyDeleteI ADORE your steampunk shadow box. The goggles, the license and fuel coupons, the toy cars and the spark plug -- wow! TFS
I'm not really sold on the configurations yet but winning one would be a good way to try it out. I would definitely do a vintage sewing theme.
ReplyDeleteYour imagination inspires! I needed an idea for how to use/display a box-full of old family photos from the late '20's and early 30's--this would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteExcellent Collage! It seems the perfect place for those treasures! You've combined them so well. I'm in awe!
ReplyDeleteI have a collection of teeny tiny father Christmas' statues that I'd use in a Christmas themed collage.
Thanks for sharing your lovely work.
I've been "collecting" minis to make boxes - probably have to have to do several themes.
ReplyDeleteYour steampunk box ir great!
I have wanted one of those boxes since I first saw it at the scrapbook store. So of course, I already know exactly what I would put in it. I would call it "in the attic" because there are always things in an attic that every artist can use. Thanks for this opportunity to fulfill my dream.
ReplyDeleteAwesome box, it looks like something my husband would like. I'd love to do a configurations box on old sewing stuff or old game pieces. Thanks so much for the chance to win one. Shari (cricutrookie)
ReplyDeleteAm so thrilled you are one of our visiting artists. Have been a fan of your blog for ages.
ReplyDeleteYour configuration is totally brilliant and love the dinky little cars. Looking forward to seeing more of your craftings. Annette x
Hi Roni -
ReplyDeleteI love your Steampunk box! It so much fun to look at all the interesting things you have in them. I love the driving googles! As to what would be in my collection box, well it would be eclectic. It would include things that I love, or make me happy. Things like Shakespeare, fairies, unicorns, vintage pieces, memories from my childhood. It would be a box that represents me.
Elaine Allen
Roni, Great idea and my grandson would love one like that as he is car crazy....and looking forward to Cars 2 being released on July 22nd here in the UK....so, sorry I would have to copy yours..they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery!!!
ReplyDeletePat
Something to do with winter. I found a lovely old faucet marked cold. The first thing I thought about was a configuration box with winter items in it.
ReplyDeleteI love this! i have been wanting to do one on Birds theme but after seeing your travel one, wow, this is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI just found your site and I truly Love it and what ytou did with those On the Road boxes? WOW!!! Very inspiring. I needed that because I am going to have to re-locate and that will give me my first project if I win! Yea!!! Be seeing you soon! sheshe65
ReplyDeleteI *love* what you did with this piece! So much detail! My favorite is the driving goggles.
ReplyDeleteI would make one themed on birds/flight if I had the chance:)

ReplyDeleteChristmas, family, flowers or spring, collections of doll stuff,....
your configuration is a blast!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to make a vintage style configurations, with lots of dressforms laces and ephemera...
Fantastic job, absolutely loved it!!! I'd maybe do it my left over memorablia from my trip to the UK, or maybe with my sons' toys and baby paraphernalia, hmm or maybe with old family pics...
ReplyDeleteYour box is GREAT... so many neat details!! I've not made a configurations box before, but they sure remind me of the old shadow boxes. If I'm lucky enough to win, I'd fill it with our this summer's travel adventures. Betsy's idea of old family photos from the 20-s and 30's is good too... adding lots of vintage too. Vintage Christmas is high on the list too. Thanks for the chance to win....
ReplyDeleteOMG! That is just over the top fabulous!! I love all the items you added. I can so see my DH loving to make some old tractor-ish donations to a piece like that!
ReplyDeleteif I won, I guess I would do our wedding 31 yrs ago (I have some flowers, napkins, etc still left)
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely use this for an ocean theme. Mermaids and starfish, treasure and shells, etc...
ReplyDeleteRoni I am constantly amazed at your generosity not just the give aways (they are always fabulous and plentiful) but how much creativity you share each and every day! I can really tell by this piece how much you adore steampunk~ this is a wonderful piece! I love how you pilfered from all of the men in your life to create this piece.
ReplyDeleteI would use the configuration box to fill with bits of halloween treasures!
Your config. box is wonderful. Love the spark plug & cars.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter and I are new Dr. Who fans...true 'Whoovians'! lol~ Wouldn't she just flip if I did this whole thing up with a mini TARDIS, duster length coat, and all things Dr. Who?...even tea!
Love your artpiece;-) I would make a Bob Geldof box - a friend and I are going to a concert with him this summer.....

ReplyDeleteI just love it.
I'm collecting my pieces to do one on my first German Shepherd and then the sky is the limit. A fishing one for my Dad and a graveyard one for my Mum. She loved visiting cementries.
Thanks for the chance to win one.
Wow, I love how personal you've made this. The little cars are awesome! My husband and I are going on our first cruise this coming fall, and I'd definitely fill this box with little treasure from our trip!
ReplyDeleteLovely work as usual, Roni! Yet another sweet giveaway! I don't have a theme as such, I'd simply fill the configuration boxes with some of my favourite trinkets, most of which are green and/or rainbow-coloured... so I guess you could say my theme was green and/or rainbows... ;)
ReplyDelete--Mina
Cool collage, Roni! I'd probably make a soccer-themed box for my daughter.
ReplyDeleteso generous of you. love your road trip. i'd like to do either a childhood theme.. focused on my kids/me as a child or a heritage theme with copies of family heritage photos.
ReplyDeleteThis is just so darling. Luv the spark plug and the vintage items that came from family members. If I won I would make a configuration box in honor of my mom.
ReplyDeleteLove your configuration box! So many of the pieces you used remind me of my past...thanks for the visual trip down memory lane!!!
ReplyDeleteI really like your box and the great ideas you have. I might use the box for things I find on our Canada trip coming up in August. We are planning on hitting a few antique stores and I will look for small trinkets and if I don't win I will buy one of those boxes. Either Canada or a tribute to my Dad. He loved fishing and so does our whole family. Thanks for great ideas. Jean
ReplyDeleteI would probably use "keys" as the theme.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
That configurations box is so AWESOME! I love the cars and little tires! If I were lucky enough to win, I would do family. I have a little boy so I could use a little car too!
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely fabulous piece, I love all the bits and pieces especially the cars and little tyres and the rusty bits. If I was to make one I would either do Steampunk, Sewing, Garden or Birds oh or Halloween LOL, the choice is endless. Tracy x
ReplyDeletelove yours. I think I would use toys. I have three tiny dolls that my husbands grandmother crocheted tiny tiny outfits for. So I would start with them.
ReplyDeleteI would use it for either Christmas theme or vacation theme. Christmas is my favorite holiday but i loved my vacation to Florida, at the beach. Thanks for the give away.
ReplyDeleteHalloween and fall would be my theme! I'd have some time to work on it and collect the treasures I would want to display in it!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your "on the road" box!

This is absolutely wonderful!! I think it is my favorite piece of all the projects you've posted. My family will be taking a beach vacation soon and I have so many ideas running through my head of an ocean-themed shadowbox created from all the wonderful treasures I know we'll find beachcombing. Thank you for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI love your box! I was just thinking today that I would like to make a box to house my sister's marble collection from our childhood--she was an awesome marble player and won countless prized marbles from boys who didn't think a girl would stand a chance against them! They would look lovely bunched up in the compartments, with the clear top added on, of course!
ReplyDeletethe(underscore)fultons(at)earthlink(dot)net
If i had a shadowbox,i would like to do a miniature theme,as i have quite a few nice little things such as 'Working' miniature scissors and a coke bottle and metal monopoly boot, and car etc, this way we could enjoy them, and they wouldn't get lost.
ReplyDeleteBy the way yours is fabulous! rosie.x
Great job! It's wonderful that you had all the right stuff!
ReplyDeleteYou know this is WAY too cool right? Awesome piece. I love all the great elements! Thanks for playing with us this month at GC as a Visiting Artist!
ReplyDeleteLove this! Inspiring! I'd create a box with an Italy theme - to commemorate a trip to Italy my husband & took a few years ago.

Thanks for the chance to win!
WOW I love your configuration box! I have completed one and I am completely hooked. I am in the process of collecting items for a second and third box for my daughter and son!
ReplyDeleteAwesome collage box Roni! The driving goggles are an outrageously cool addition! I really like the repeating element of the three cars in a row. It is a great design feature together like that, rather than splitting them up. I also really love the tiny stack of tires. This piece has a lot of wonderful and interesting pieces in it. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love your use of the uphostery tacks. I think I would use mine to make a grandma sewing box items. I have some of her items that I use to take out and play just looking thru her box.
ReplyDeleteI love your shadowbox creation... especially the old cars - just terrific! I can think of so many things that I would love to make with a shadowbox like this but I'd probably do something asian-inspired as it is one of my favorite themes.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's all about the ocean! I have dreamed of living on the bech since I was 10 years old and now I do!! With lots of vintage items I've collected, this would be my theme. Thanks Roni for the great inspiration and chance to try this out!
ReplyDeleteI think you do Steampunk like nobody else!! I love it!!
this would be perfect for some of the things that have happened to me over the years and that I have tiny mementoes from...

Just fabulous!!! I just love how you can take any little piece of something old and turn it into a work of art. For me, if I won this, one of my dreams was to always live on a farm with various animals....horses,goats, pigs and my favorite cows. I would do a farm theme....Yeah, I can picture little mini cows and haystacks....yummy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!
I've been collecting circus items for quite a while and would use them in the configurations box were I to win it. Today I found a giant Circus World coin at a yard sale for 25 cents to add to my stash. I have tiny lions and seals, an elephant, some great fabric, lots of paper. etc. I love your "on the road" collection--very inspiring! Anne, yourmainestamper
ReplyDeleteRoni your shadow box is amazing! I love every single detail. If I won the Configurations box I would do a vintage sewing themed box. Thank you for sharing and for the opportunity to win!
ReplyDeleteYou always inspire me, Roni! I would stick with your "On the Road" theme because it brought back some memories of vacations with my Mom, dad and two little sisters waaayy back in the '60s. I have some great photos from these trips and I have quite a few travel themed stamps. However, I don't have a lot of 3-D type embellishments, but I bet I can come up with something. :)
ReplyDeleteReally love the steampunk configuration! I think I would do a Vintage sewing items configuration, or maybe a beach theme, since I sooo love the beach. Thanks so much for all your inspiration, and a chance to win a configuration box!
ReplyDeleteWanda
Love your "on the road" box! I have a collection of antique ecru bears that I would love to put in an arrangement with pink roses. Thanks! Diane H.
ReplyDeleteI just found your website and OMG I absolutely LOVE this shadow box. Something that means more to me than anything would be the word HOPE. I am a cancer survivor and so I would make one to always remind myself to never give up on HOPE!! Thanks for this opportunity!
ReplyDeleteYour configuration box reminds me of my OH garage which is well organised .... he has refused to give planning permision for me to bring any more little houses home so with the box I could find a home for some more lol so thank you for the cahnce to win
ReplyDeleteVon x
Love your configuration box Roni, I saw it first over at Gingersnap. If I won one I would probably do a nature theme. I love birds, butterflies and nature in general so that is what I would like to create. Thanks for sharing all your techniques and your generous giveaways Roni.
ReplyDeleteMy theme would be miniature teapots. My husband's grandmother collected them for years and he inherited them recently when she moved into a nursing home because she finally got tired of cooking for herself at the age of 98.

ReplyDeleteI love your road trip theme and something similar would suit a lot of my relatives for gifts, especiall the old cars and the spark plug, but I would probably do a gothic theme. I have lots of little items that would be perfect for it.
ReplyDeletetatteredgypsyrose@gmail.com
I have never had one of these confiuration boxes but would love to try it out. The theme I would choose would have to be nature ( birds, branches, nests, eggs etc, or a sewing theme since I'm an avid sewer as well as scrapper. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a breathtaking piece, so many wonderful elements in it. I think I would make a sewing box or perhaps something with game pieces.
ReplyDeleteLove your 'on the road' box especially the tires and sparkplug. I recently lost both my parents so I would love to do a 'memorial' box in their honor.
