Good Happy Monday Morning Everyone!!!
I am so excited today! I am going to share my first "REAL" watercolor with you. I say real because I bought some Dr. Ph. Martin Hydrus Fine Art Watercolor Paints and I haven't really painted an actual picture from start to finish. Well, I should say I did paint one when I was a (hs) freshman but it wasn't very good. I've always wanted to watercolor but if you recall I explained about my art experience in school - not being good enough so I never perused it. After my taste of drawing again I decided that I was going to go ahead and take the plunge!
Recently I saw this photo on Ken Oliver's FB page. I have no idea what type of flower it is but I was so taken with it I asked him if I might be allowed to try my hand at it. He graciously said yes so this was my first subject. (I've been saving it until I got my paints.)
Edited to add: It is a Star Magnolia and it's a very early bloomer. Simply stunning!

This weekend I set about drawing the flower - it's just a rough sketch but it turned out fairly close I'd say...
and here's an "in the process" photo - starting to take shape!
and finally here is my at the moment finished product! I know it's not perfect but I am so happy with how it turned out! I do have to admit though that I'm too chicken to try to paint a background - I'm afraid I'll screw it up!
And here's another look at the photo...
Well, what do you think?
Honest opinions please.
Gorgeous

ReplyDeleteOh wow you are so inspiring!! This is so beautiful; so much for you to be proud of!
ReplyDeleteExtremely well done Roni! As you know, white is the most challenging watercolor to use and you really did capture it in your piece! Beautiful
ReplyDeleteFABulous - I think you did an exceptional job with this - especially as white/shades thereof are notoriously difficult AND you picked a flower too, which isn't easy. Your painting is lovely and you should deffo do more :-D Great job Roni :-D

ReplyDeleteRoni, you did an amazing job, still can't believe it is your first watercolor, looks like you have been doing this for years!! WOW.
ReplyDeleteHow did you like working with the Dr. Ph. Martin's Hydrus Watercolors? You did a good job with the shading. Have you tried working with a mask yet? I used the Incredible White Mast from Grafix and have had good results with that. I hope you share more as you go along. thanks as always for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job Roni. It's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSo well done! I'm with Julie. Definitely looks like you've doing this for a long time.
ReplyDeleteHello Roni,
ReplyDeleteYou should be pleased as this is a super job, now finish it....Just add the colour to the Bg, face the fear and do it. As you know, watercolour is very forgiving, pick the brush up today.
Smiles:)

Water coloring is the most difficult painting medium because if you make a mistake, you can't just "paint over it." Water coloring something "white" has to be the hardest thing to do also. I think you did a marvelous job! You should pursue this passion!!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone! It was so much fun to paint. And you know a few people mentioned that white was hard to paint - I didn't know that actually...guess it was good to not know it so I wasn't afraid to give it a go - LOL!! Sometimes it's best not to know these things ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful, and I teach watercolor!
ReplyDeleteLove it! You did fantastic!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! It looks like the real flower
ReplyDeleteYour star magnoila flower is beautiful !!

ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely lovely! I predict more fabulous WC projects in your future. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's very pretty! Nice job, Roni. I love water color painting, but have never been very good it. After a lot of frustration I admitted defeat and gave up. However, you've inspired me...maybe I'll have to give it a another try.
