I had an interesting conversation this weekend with a fellow crafter.
She made a comment about liking to see all the new stamps out there not really paying much attention to blogs that use older stamps.
It got me thinking so I posted a poll (to the right).
Do you like seeing projects using only the latest and greatest stamps?
Do you prefer older stamps being used?
or
Do you even care if the stamps are new or used?
I never really gave it much thought...of course I like to purchase new stamps but we all know that unless you've won the lottery recently you can't buy a new stamp set all the time so I usually just use what I have on hand and (in the words of Tim Gunn) make it work.
Honestly I normally don't even give stamps a though to being old or new when I'm looking at a project...it's all about how you use it the stamps that attracts or entices me.
Shoot I've even gone in search of retired stamp sets because they somehow speak to me.
What do you think?

i like to see it all. Old, new. Mix it up not just the trendy. We pay good money for stamps and I like to get new ideas for using the ones I have.
ReplyDeleteI also like to see it all---old and new. To be honest, most of the stuff I have has been around a couple/few years. New ideas are always great but the stamps don't necessarily need to be new.

ReplyDeletePersonally, I like it all!Both old and new. I can't afford all the new stamps out there that come out every week it seems, so when I do buy a stamp set, I want to make sure it'll be a set that I will use more than 2x...And with all the wonderful talent out there, it's nice to see examples with both old and new stamps...So, I'm not picky...:)

ReplyDeleteSome blogs only promote new because they are primarily sales blogs and the posts are designed to make us want to buy product.
Occasionally I do see a stamp I want to buy but I'm mostly after inspiration in general-- and education. I figure I can incorporate the stamps I own and yield a similar result.
I do like some of the haul videos because they alert me to new products I'd never know about otherwise.
And haul videos from the brick and mortar stores are nice because I see neat stuff that I can specifically look for if I want to buy it and don't miss out on anything or have to spend much time looking.
As for old stamps---The Frugal Crafter used an old stamp that I loved and wanted badly. I discovered it was a retired Stampin Up set and guess what? I searched for it and found it on Ebay, which was my very first purchase ever from there. Winning the bid was very exciting and I got it for cheap too.
So--it's all good for me.
I like to see it all mixed up as well. I am especially attracted when someone does a creative twist with a older stamp. My old stamps are trusted friends!

ReplyDeleteI prefer to see both, new is nice to see because I haven't seen it before but there are so many stamps if it's old and I've never seen it, It's new to me too. I wouldn't know the difference lol. I love seeing stamps I own and see how differently they are used it's just wonderful old new it's all the same it's just the perspective of the person I think. Plus I love picking up a deal when someone is de-stashing. :)

Old, new -- whatever! Love it all. Agree with so many posters that creativity is what I enjoy looking at.
ReplyDeleteIt is not WHAT you use, it is the WAY you use it which is important to me. I have very few stamps, and as much as I would like to, I certainly can't justify buying everything I would like to have. I get inspired much more by the techniques used than the stamps themselves.
ReplyDeleteWhile I like to think I like it all currently there is a new flood of graphic designs mostly with journaling in mind but turning up in many clean and simple card designs. I am afraid the graphics leave me with cold, businesslike feeling that I do not want to convey to friends and family. So at the moment I am happy to enjoy digging through my stash to well loved stamps fresh looks with new techniques.

ReplyDeleteI like them all. I decided to count the stamps that I have the other night. I fessed up with my husband. Now, mind you, the count isn't accurate because I counted sets as one. Are you all sitting down? 475!!! I could have dropped my coffee cup. And, I use them all. I particularly enjoy children stamps. Using older stamps give us character. I won't be buying anymore because my craft room is in my bedroom.

ReplyDeleteLike you, a stamp has to speak to me (sometimes they speak to much - LOL!). I don't care if it is old or new. If I like it, I will use it. What a waste of money it would be to not use a stamp you loved before merely because it is now old. Find a way to change it up, use it differently, and as Mr. Gunn says, "Make it work!"

I'm with you, I never think about old or new, only what I like. It doesn't much matter to me what you use because I'll probably never have the same stamp, and I can't afford to buy new ones. The vast majority of mine are from thrift stores, yard sales and rummage sales. A few are from clearance bins at the crafts stores, a few gifts. Buying the latest releases doesn't make it to my radar. It's how you use it that matters to me. But I'm happy there are people who buy the new ones because my used ones have to come from somewhere! I'm into reading about your techniques, Roni.

ReplyDeleteOld or new, who cares ? I love my old stamps and use them a lot but I also like to get new stuff, who doesn't? It's what is done with them that matters.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't find your poll but I'm an everything goes kinda gal. It's nice to see the new ones but they aren't any good if they don't work for the project. I like a bargain so that means I buy more oldies than newies. As you say it's a price thing so to splash out on a new set it's got to be very appealing. As Joan says, who cares, as long as it works

ReplyDeleteWell, there won't be much variety if you just show the new. Because trends dominate and companies merge, there just isn't an interesting enough variety with all newly issued stamps. I love seeing older stamps used new ways, just the way you do it. How do we define "older?" For me it means anything before current trend --maybe four years old or more. Some new stamps are interesting but the current trend toward chevron, geometric, arrows and trite phrases is boring, especially compared to your work.
ReplyDeleteI don't worry about new or older. I start with a theme, and go look for the stamps I'll like to use for it! For design team work I do use the newest stamps of course! I collect stamps I like, also some that are discontinued...
