Layered Ephemera Gothic Arch Collage

Today I thought I'd share a fun project which incorporates all sorts of fun ephemera...from book and ledger pages, map pieces, tissue from clothing patterns, vintage sheet music, etc... Just about any paper you can get your hands on!

If desired, before you begin on your collage you can dye your paper(s). I used a bit of Distress Ink re-inker and water.... You could always add a bit of shimmer by adding a small amount of Perfect Pearls to the mix.

After your paper is dry, begin adhering them to your gothic arch using your favorite collage type glue. I used PPA for this collage ;) For this particular collage I applied each consecutive layer at an angle on the opposite side as shown.

This just gives you an idea on what your gothic arch might look like. You'll need to let it dry completely. I like to let it dry over night as humid as it is right now.

Now that the collage has dried, trim away the excess papers.

Don't throw the excess away though! Use the scraps to cut out flowers to add to the arch design. You may need to peel apart some of the layers if you are cutting the flowers with paper punches. Color these flowers in the same fashion as suggested above.

Begin decorating your arch with a layer of stamped images. This leafy branch is from Just For Fun Rubber Stamps.

I also added a bit of texture by stamping with bubble wrap...

(Note the very special "stamp holder" I'm using ;) LOL!! Yes, I just added a bit of double stick tape to the back and used my hand!)

Finish your collage off with a main image, a bit of text and layered flowers which were cut from the extra bits of paper!

How'd you like all those layers?!?!

It is so much fun to use paper ephemera in your stamping projects, they really do add so much depth and interest to the final collage.

AND it's usually free or very cheap!!

Vintage Postcard Sunday - This and That

Happy Sunday!

Well, I didn't get my card sketch done like I planned yesterday so I will pop it in here sometime this week.

Today however I have a mish-mash of neat vintage postcards from my collection to share with you. Remember ~ feel free to use these images in your work but please don't compile and sell these images.

This is great...it's from the turn of the century!

This coming week I mentioned I was going to be making some ATC's & Gothic Arches.

I have decided that this week we'll be working in layers....

Napkin Art - Altered Flashlight!

You silly people didn't think I'd tease you with the flashlight in my Off the Beaten Path post then not alter it did you?!?!?

I actually had to wait for it to dry completely before I could cut away the excess napkin. I started working on it after I made the headband and it took much longer to dry thanks to all the humidity :S

So here goes ~

Fun HUH???

When altering something with moving parts ~ like the on and off switch on this flashlight ~ you'll need to leave room to move it back and forth. To help with this I flipped it on and off while I was applying the napkin/glue so I knew just how far I could go without interfering in it's path.

BTW, lots of people have been asking where all the cool napkin designs came from....the Napkin Swap of course ;) I found many of my designs at a local party supply store. They had TONS of cool designs in all sorts of themes. I also bought a few from e-bay that I couldn't find anywhere else.

Since we've had fun with napkins all week I thought I'd share this flashlight and a few extra alterables and napkins with one lucky winner!!

This week we have some very fun colors to play with...

The very first thing that came to mind when I saw these colors....

the 70's!!!

O.k...I have to admit this is not retro to me, I lived it. I made it through the burnt orange refrigerators, avocado toilets,mustard seed yellow shag carpet and wood paneling so this color combo brings back memories of a funky colored childhood - LOL!!

Always go with your first instinct so I pulled out some very 70's looking pattern paper, the funky new Kitty Power stamp, added a bit of the Artsy Pulpit Flower in the background and this is what I came up with...

This was a fun color combo to work with!

Napkin Art - Off the Beaten Path!

Well today we're going to work on something off the beaten path...

Just look around and grab something that you normally wouldn't think of as "art". That is exactly what we'll be using today!

I just grabbed a couple of items from my "to alter" cabinets to give you an idea of some fun stuff that can be paired with napkin collage that might not immediately come to mind.

Today I am using the white headband...when I alter the black one I will first apply a layer of white or light colored acrylic paint. This holds true with any dark colored item as you will need a lighter background for the napkin designs to show up good on your finished project.

Remember to tear out all of the relevant images you will be using from your napkin choice to help things move along smoothly.

Begin by applying a layer of glue, add a bit of the napkin, smooth and continue. Since this is such a small area to work with I am just using my fingers today instead of the paintbrush. I think I get a better feel working around the edges with my fingers.

Speaking of the edges, I wanted to be sure and show you how I handle them... I like to roll the napkin over the edge towards the under side of the headband. Just let the excess napkin hang there ~ don't try to smooth it down over the teeth. After our project has dried we will take care of the excess.

Now after the entire headband has been covered, let it dry completely! Don't rush it...if you're battling the humidity like we are here it could take several hours to dry.

Once the headband has dried, remove the excess napkin by lightly sanding around the edge. You don't have to use much pressure as it should come off quite easily.

And you're set to go!!

Dry time aside, this is a very quick and easy technique and these headbands are so fun to alter. I bought a multi pack at the Dollar Store so you could easily make a different headband for every day of the week!

It also makes a great teen craft since they have wearable art of their own creation.

You could further spruce them up by adding flowers, faux gemstones, pearls, etc. The sky is the limit!

Faux Dew Drop Embellishments!

I'm sure most of you are familiar with the nifty little "Dew Drops" embellishments by Robin's Nest.

Now, I have tried them because I received a few from a friend but I haven't bought any myself because well ~ you know me...I'm "thrifty" (sounds better than cheap huh? LOL!!!). I have had them in my hand a couple times but I just couldn't bring myself to pay $3.50 - $7.00 for a tiny bottle of these little colored gems (100 per bottle).

I've also read a few places that the colors are a bit splotchy on them but people "fix" em by coloring the bottoms with a marker. Definately don't want to buy something that I have to fix before I can even use it!

Well this past weekend I was looking around at Jo-Anns and found these

(in the floral dept. near the glass stones, vase filler area)....

The exact same as what one of the lss's was charging for the tiny bottle!!!

There must be thousands of those little devils in this bag!

And I can make them any color I want either with Alcohol Inks (shown below), or adding a bit of color to the bottom with markers or permanent inks!

Now how freakin' cool is that????

Layered Napkin Collage

After a night if drying I finished up the Layered Napkin Collage that I started yesterday. In addition to the flat layers of napkins in the collage I used the Basic Napkin Collage technique to help create a 3-D butterfly and I also stamped this beautiful woman (Stampers Anonymous). I added a bit of lace and gemstone brads for a nice collage...added Ruby Red Stickles Glitter Glue for the ribbon in her hair and finished the collage off with a "S" So Loved rub-on.
