Stickles Saturday...Let it Snow (again!)

Gosh it seems like it's always snowing or freezing across much of the country so this frame I made is quite timely don't you think?

Stickles 01-11 Roni 002

I started out with a plain wood frame.  I painted it white then added all sorts of snowflake details with the Stickles Glitter Glue.  I used Purple, Thistle, True Blue, and Midnight Blue Stickles.  I didn't have a good wintery photo so I decided to stamp a little message instead (all images- Decembers Get Inked kit).

Have a great weekend friends!!

Pillow Box Valentine's Day Treat Holder

Each year I try to make a different treat holder for Valentine's Day to help out all those room mothers out there ;)  Since my boys are 18 & 23 I don't get to play room mother anymore but maybe in about 5-6 years I can play room grandma - LOL!!

Anyway, here is a typical pillow box holder shrunk down a bit. The size will vary depending on how large you want to print it out.  I printed mine approx. 5 3/8 x 4 5/8" for a finished inside diameter is approx. 2.5x 2.25.  The outside is a bit longer if you include the pointy ends.  I was able to fit 4 pieces of Dove Chocolate hearts to give you an idea of what you can fit inside.

I left them plain because I wanted you to see the stamping but you could add ribbons, tags, or other embellishments to spice them up a bit.  You could use these not only for Valentine's Day but they are great anytime you want to give a small gift, treat or other goodie.  Simply change the stamps and embellishments and you're set to go!

Just For Fun Friday - Think Spring - QUICK!

I know I'm pushing Spring a bit but after all of the snow and continuing FREEZING temps I vote we all Think Spring really really hard and maybe it will get a bit warmer - lol!!!

This week I created a couple Just For Fun Rubber Stamps cards to remind us of Spring and all it's lovely sights...flowers and butterflies to start off with :)  I tied both of these cards together by using the script background stamp. Hopefully even though you may be freezing these cards will bring a warm smile to your face!

this card was a bit difficult to photograph...those stickles sure do mess with my camera!

Steampunk Faux Fuse Charm

O.k..I know I mentioned yesterday that I was going to share a nifty little pillow box for Valentine's Day but in the wee hours of the morning a totally awesome charm came to me and I just had to try it.  It worked so well I couldn't wait to share it with you all so here goes...

I guess I should explain a bit first...I love the steampunk look but some of the materials they use are usually expensive, rare or hard to find.  I love the way they use vintage glass fuses and stuff but man are they ever expensive.  I found a box of them at a flea market a couple months ago but they were like $40.00.  WAY too expensive to experiment with.  Sooooo I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out an easy and cheap way to recreate them without breaking the bank (or cutting my fingers - lol).  So, this is how I came to be dreaming about fuses and charms.

Steampunk Faux Fuse Charm

Supplies:

Clear Plastic Tube
2 Flat Rondelle Spacer Beads
2 Bead Caps
1 Head Pin or Eye Pin (2"+)
Seed Beads
Wire Working Tools
Jumpring (optional)
Watch Gears (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut a piece of clear plastic tube approx. 1" long.  The ends need to be as close to straight as possible.  This is going to be our faux glass piece for our fuse.

2. Glue the flat rondelle spacer beads to each end of the plastic tube.

Steampunk Faux Fuse Charm 003

3. Slide one of the bead caps on the eye pin then slide the tube over the pin.

Steampunk Faux Fuse Charm 005

4. Slide the seed beads on the eye pin.  Make sure they go all the way down.  Continue adding beads until it reaches the top of the tube.

5. Add the final bead cap and make your loop with the remainder of the pin.  Clip off any excess.

Steampunk Faux Fuse Charm 007

and here is what the faux fuse looks like at this point...Really looks like glass doesn't it?

Steampunk Faux Fuse Charm 008

6. (optional) To add that little "extra" to really give it a Steampunk feel I attached several different sizes of watch gears to a jump ring on the bottom eye pin.

And you're done!!

Isn't this charm awesome!!!
OMG ~ I was so excited when I finished it.
I just love how it turned out.
Very inexpensive and oh so easy but man does it ever look great!
So, what do you think?

Altered Bottle Cap Charms

Well we got our snow ~ I'm not sure how much we really did end up getting because of all the blowing and drifting snow.  In the flatter areas we had about 12-14" but we had drifts much deeper.  There was so much snow on our front porch we couldn't open the door this a.m.!  It's all been shoveled and plowed so we're good to go.

On to the bottle caps...

This is another of my favorite charms to make.  It's so much fun because you can do so much with it.  I like use stamped or collage images to which I add text, tiny embellishments, glitter, micro beads, tiny buttons, etc.  If you're careful you can punch extra holes so you can hang extra "bits" on the finished cap.

Here is a quick look on "how to" for altered bottle cap charms.

Supplies:

Bottle Cap
Collage or Stamped Images
Rotary Tool or other Hole Maker
Paper Piercer
Mini Embellishments (optional)
Glossy Accents or similar
Rubber Mallet

Instructions:

1. Make a hole in the bottle cap.  This is easier said than done at times.  When I'm making holes in the bottle cap I normally just use my Crop-A-Dile.  It cuts through the metal like nothing but it does make a little dent as you can see.

I got the wise idea to try to drill extra holes in the rim of the cap to see if I could get rid of the little dents.  I decided to used my Dremel rotary tool...  Initially I positioned the drill bit in the little notches on the rim.  I thought it would hold the bit in place and make it easy to drill ;)  Well, it looked like the bit was just sitting there spinning away so I kicked it up a few more speeds...  I finally started getting tiny chips of metal but dang did that cap ever get hot!  I made the mistake of moving the hand I was holding the cap down cause if was getting pretty toasty (while I was still drilling). Next thing I know I hear the cap hit my window and ricochet off of various "things" in my room.  I have no clue where it finally came to rest...I couldn't find it!

Soooo, on to bottle cap #2.  I stood this bottle cap up on it's end and tried to hold one edge. This way I could drill straight down.  That worked pretty good cause I could put quite a bit of pressure on it until it broke through the rim and I ran the Dremel through my wood block about 1/2"!!!  Luckily it missed my finger!  Whew!!  That was way scary and far too close for comfort.

Not to be deterred (after all no blood had been spilled), next I laid the bottle cap back down and decided to drill through with the Dremel laying flat parallel with the table, lined it up with the bottle cap rim and started at it again.  That worked MUCH better and I didn't even drill through any body parts!

So if you decide to use a Dremel to drill holes, please be careful!  It works but you could very easily drill through or burn your own parts.

Bottle Cap Charms 002

2. (optional)  You can use the cap full size or you can flatten it.  The well in the cap isn't as deep when you flatten it but I like the look of the rim when it is flattened.   To do so, place a pounding mat (like what comes with TH's hammer) on the floor.  Place the bottle cap on the mat so the inside of the cap is facing the mat.  Give it a good wack with a rubber mallet!  Usually one will do the trick and it flattens the cap out and flips the rim up all in one motion.  Besides that it's alot of fun...sometimes I just sit there and flatten cap after cap ~ it's a great stress reliever and more safe than trying to flatten people things ;)  LOL!!!

3. Now remove the rubber liner.  I use my paper piercer to poke it and get it started.  Some come out better than others as you can see.

Bottle Cap Charms 001

4. Punch or cut desired image to fit inside the cap.  I have a circle punch that is perfect ~ I think it's right around 1" or so.

Bottle Cap Charms 003

5. (optional) If desired, you can color the bottle cap prior to adding the image to the cap.  You could use alcohol inks, acrylic paints, pigment inks, copics or Bic Markers  like I did for this example.

Bottle Cap Charms 005

6. Apply a thin layer of Glossy Accents (or similar clear drying glue) to the center of the cap.  Press the image into the glue and center.  Make sure all edges are secure so the image doesn't float in later steps.

7. Add desired embellishments at this time.

Bottle Cap Charms 008

8. Finish filling the caps up with Glossy Accents and let them dry completely.

Bottle Cap Charms 009

Tomorrow I'll share the finished charms.
I also have a fun stamped pillow box container to share that would make perfect treat holders for Valentine's Day!
Hope to see you then!

P.S... Several people have asked what I am going to be doing with the charms I'm making.  I'm going to be doing a few things with them actually. I'm going to give away one of the finished charm pins in a couple weeks so even if someone didn't have time to join in on the Altered Charm Swap they still have a chance to win one.

How freakin' cool is that :)

I have known about this for a few weeks and have been bustin' at the seams to tell you all about it :)

Hopefully they do well and pick up more later on.

Just in Case....(blizzard warning)

I have a bottle cap charm planned for tomorrow which works out perfectly since it's when the Bottle Cap was originally patent.

BUT

I wanted to let you know that we are under the Blizzard Warning (like so many people) and now they are talking about real possibilities of the power going out through out Indiana.  So just in case you don't see me tomorrow or for a couple days (eek!) it's because of Mother Nature playing games.

Hopefully we'll just get the snow ~ they are talking about 12-18" in our area and we still have power so I can just play play play ;)  LOL!!

I hope that everyone in the path of this monster storm takes care and stays safe and sound through the whole mess.

Take care and stay warm friends!!!

Happy February!!
