I was so excited when I saw the papers for the Club Scrap Navigation Kit - it has a lovely vintage Nautical theme! Since both of my parents and my maternal grandpa were all in the Navy I knew this was the perfect time to honor their service to our country.
I wanted to create a trio of canvases that looked good together as a grouping so I started out by spraying each canvas with blue and green walnut spray ink then added a sprinkle of walnut crystals here and there. You will also notice I used a thin gold string and small Dew Drops as embellishments on all of the canvases. I used the dark chocolate map for the background then added torn pieces of the book pattern paper and distressed most all of the edges to help the uniformity.
I made a canvas for each person - the first is my grandpa. Awesome photo huh?
I used three strands of jute to create this knot for beside the photo. I chose this particular quote for him because I don't ever remember my grandpa being afraid of anything but always funny and happy. Of course that was from a child's perspective....
Next up is my Mom...
Look at that attitude - she still has it!
I chose this "cut-a-part" for my Mom's canvas because she met my Dad while they were in the Navy - stationed at Memphis I believe. It led her on quite the journey to where she is today.
Finally my Dad - his canvas is the largest because I had the most photos of him. I wanted to go all out and incorporate lots of layers and elements which also relates back to the sentiment for this canvas... "The best things in life are the People you LOVE, the places you've SEEN and the memories you've MADE along the way." Seems so appropriate for him and his time in the Navy/Life.
The bottom photo is the crew he lived/worked with on his ship.
I stamped a few of the stamp images multiple times and paper pieced them back together for a more dimensional look.
This anchor charm holds a photo of my Mom while she was in the Navy
since that's where they met.
I wanted lots of texture so I used a piece of torn pizza box cardboard behind the photos. I also used some of the same jute from my grandpa's canvas to hold the anchor charm with the picture of my Mom.
and here are all three canvases together.
I hope you've enjoyed this very personal bit of art using the Nautical kit...
It was a pleasure to make them and share it with you.
The next stop on the hop is
if you get lost along the way
remember you can find the complete hop listing on this post:
Happy New Year!!!
All the best to you and yours
in 2016!
Thank you for sharing, and thank your parents/grandpa for their service!
ReplyDeleteRoni, after reading your lovely comments about your family and the heartfelt tribute of their service to our Country, I found that I couldn't stop crying. You can see how tenderly and thoughtfully you placed each photo as a testimonial to your continued devotion to all things family.
ReplyDeleteRoni, I know that the observance of the first National holiday to remember our veterans, is Memorial Day, and it's not until May. I happen to be one of those individuals who strongly believe that we don't need a "holiday" to thank or remember the brave women and men who serve or who have served our country. As we approach the beginning of 2016, and headlines begin to compete for the latest Resolution Fad, I can easily imagine that your local newspaper would be extremely interested in this touching tribute reminding everyone that our veterans are to be cherished irregardless of the time of year. I think a story such as yours would work well as a New Years Day editorial to stir the hearts and minds of any community for a truly positive start to 2016.
My personal goal for 2016, is to try to create more authentic and obtainable New Years resolutions. I can't think of anything more important than to let the families in all branches of the military know how grateful I am for their willingness to say the ultimate "Yes" to serve. I am going to share this project with everyone that I know who has a loved one in the military.
Roni, I also think think that this paper from the Navigation Kit from Club Scrap, would work so beautiful for card making projects such as, Operation Write Home. I know that this group's card making campaign is finished for 2015. Do you know of any other card making groups supporting the military? I am confident that the desire to write home is a 24/7 need and you have shared so many beautiful techniques and lovely materials for us to use such as this paper. Of course, dealing with the military, there are to be expected restrictions, but knowing that a a Veteran is holding a card you made, has to be the ultimate crafters reward! Thank you once again Roni for being our Mentor
Roni, what a wonderful way to show your love for them and honor their service too! great job!

ReplyDeleteNice use of older, yellowed and black & white photos. I have several boxes of aged photos, and have trouble matching paper to them. This gives me inspiration! But if I remembered my color wheel, yellow (photos) is opposite of blue (this kit), then I have found a match. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYou have lots to be proud of, your wonderful family and your creative talents! Such a special post, thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeletePerfect paper for these special photos.
ReplyDeleteI really love what you did with the canvaes and your explanation certainly makes them special. For posterity sake, I think you should attach the explanation behind all three canvases - as a provenance - so that the family members that see it in the future can also have your reasons and motivation for what you did. Truly a labor of love!
ReplyDeleteHi Roni! First please thank your Mom and Dad for their service from me! These are beautiful historical pieces that will be cherished by your family. I love the story of how your Mom and Dad met in the service since that is how I met my husband too. Thank you for sharing your family history with us!
ReplyDeleteRoni! I like all the layering and textures! What an awesome present made for your parents. Those pictures are so neat. I love looking through my grandparents old World War II photos. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful canvases. I love how you stained and layered them. The gold string really pulls it all together. Beautiful.
