Hello Friends
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas with your family and friends.
It's almost the start of a new year and I've been thinking a lot about crafting, the blog and how much things have changed in the past few years on how people are viewing art.
(Just a warning this may get a bit long and boring.)
As you may or may not know Imagine has changed their Design Team from a mix of written tutorials and videos to an all video team in 2020. So my time with them has come to an end and it has given me time to think about art and where more and more teams/companies are headed.

While I made videos many years ago (before it was popular) I decided at the time it wasn't for me. I am very shy so I don't do well with the talking portion nor do I enjoy all of the computer work of splicing, editing, adding photos, music, etc. It is also a very expensive endeavor to make good videos what with the equipment, lighting, music, etc.
Instagram....
I'm sorry to Instagram lovers out there but I just don't get the concept of endlessly scrolling through hundreds and hundreds of photos... Honestly to me it's a huge time waster and after a bit I feel like a zombie just gazing at a tiny screen. Yep, you can see some pretty stuff but there are no instructions, no links, usually no supply lists, just pictures. It's a popularity contest that I have no interest in participating in.
It's disheartening that most design teams require you to participate in these SM platforms in addition to any number of other SM outlets. I want to create art, not become a slave to posts, hits, clicks, hearts and viewers. I am so not into the whole high school popularity contest that it has become.
I'm an inky, glitter and glue covered girl and I'm feeling like a dinosaur.
Like I'm outdated and no longer needed, like quality and substance doesn't matter anymore.
Could you do me a favor and let me know the answer to these questions....
Do you still read blogs?
Do you still like written tutorials with photos?
(which is what I do)
Do you prefer Instagram?
Videos?
Pinterest ?
(which I do like because it actually links to more information.)
Facebook?
Something Else?
I'd appreciate any input you might offer.

ReplyDeleteI still read blogs and enjoy the tutorials & photos. I'm not big on Instagram, although I do visit and comment there... it's a bit of a frustration to me because I can't get or send direct messages there and I also can't post pics there. (No smart phone so can't download their apps). I regularly check out FB and prefer it to IG, as I can participate more. I do look at Pinterest occasionally, but not as often as the others.
Hello, Roni! I could not agree with you more! I am a blogger, enjoy blogging, and definitely still read blogs. I've made quite a few blog friends along the way, we visit each other's blogs and comment regularly. I do enjoy written tutorials with photos as long as everything is spelled out step by step, with measurements, etc. Although I have Instagram, I don't have a Smartphone, so I don't really "get it." I have Twitter and Pinterest but don't use them either. I occasionally pop into Facebook to see what's going on - I'm in a few groups over there - but I don't have the time or interest in all of the social media. I would rather spend my spare time crafting or doing other things. I do watch crafty videos on YouTube, and I do get a lot of inspiration there. So to sum up, blogging and YouTube are my picks! Thanks for asking the questions! I enjoy your blog very much! Looking forward to seeing what you do in 2020!
ReplyDeleteI still much prefer a blog. I don't do twitter, instagram or anything else like that. I do like facebook but not particularly to get inspiration. Mostly just to keep up with family and friends. I do like youtube videos but prefer clear written direction with photos. Thank you for asking and look forward to your posts. I've gotten slack at commenting but will try to do better so you know we're still out here.

I'm another dinosaur (more so than you). I don't do FB, Instagram, Flickr, Pinterest, etc. I do look at blogs an comment when I can. I sometimes watch videos on You Tube but find written tutorials with photos much easier to follow. I want to take this opportunity to wish you Happy Holidays.
ReplyDeleteI prefer blogging, but I do post my blog links on my facebook page as well. I probably prefer picture tutorials because I have little patience for videos. They are too long for me. I did start an instagram because there are a lot of artists there and it honesty is easier to comment there than on some blogs. I agree that making videos is too time consuming and probably is not worth the effort, time and money involved. I can’t image in most of those folks make enough to be worth their time.
ReplyDeleteHo Roni - I still LUV Blogland. I screamed and kicked my way to starting an IKEsART FB page but that is about it. I don't do any of the other platforms and have no intention of doing so. We will carry on our Challenges in Blogland :-D

I love blogs! I like Pinterest too, as long as they link to tutorials. I watch some videos, but some start out so "chatty" that after the first 5 minutes of watching things that are nothing to do with the project, I give up.

I much prefer blogs with written tutorials and pictures to videos and Instagram! I like Pinterest if the links take me to some actual directions without several pages of introductions before getting down to the good stuff! Happy New Year, Roni, and keep up your inspiring projects!!
ReplyDeleteI am a mix. I still have a lengthy list of blogs I check in with whenever they post through netvibes. Helps me to keep up without having 100's of emailed blog updates to wade through. I also really enjoy you tube. The ladies I watch do long streams (3-4 hours) that keep me company as I can no longer go out anywhere. I have made a lot of FIBs (friends in the box) friends from being a part of the group who stream and who just chat and try projects. I don't have a smart device so no instagram or twitter for me. I do still do pinterest. It is my on-line library of inspiration and ideas. Any sometimes just pretty things to look at. Hope that helps. hugs my friend. t...
ReplyDeleteI still read blogs and will continue to, Feedly is my friend. I like the blog post tutorials better than the YouTube videos. I find that I wander off from the YouTube’s before they are done. Way too much time watching action I don’t need to see. I watch double time but still fast forward. Instagram, I don’t even check. Some things I like to see in the video but I don’t need to watch someone color. Etc. I do like to copy and paste to word and save info on my comfort future reference.
ReplyDeleteI don't read blogs as much as I used to, I will admit. I do love Pinterest though; if Pinterest points me to a blog post, I will read it. Often, if I find that post interesting, I will further explore that blog (like this one).
ReplyDeleteI like to watch videos, but tend to prefer the ones that have been fast forwarded without real-time speaking. I tend to watch videos without sound while I am at the gym. LOL! Usually, it is easy enough to follow along with how to do a technique with a video done this way.
But, I do not mind the written tutorial on a blog; but, they must have enough pictures and have adequate descriptions. I've seen far too many "tutorials" that just don't cut the mustard in this department, therefore making it impossible to actually achieve the desired outcome when trying it out for yourself.

I have followed your blog (and others) for many years. I like videos and written tutorial with sequential pictures. You might consider doing videos with voice overs. This may help with shyness. I don't do twitter, Instagram, and very little Facebook. Hope this helps.

ReplyDeleteHi Roni - I went back to find this post about blogging. I have been absent on my blog for a while due to family commitments but I love to read blogs! I too am not an Instagram fan! Pinterest and Facebook are where I am most of the time. Keep up the beautiful work you do!
