Stencils & Gelato's

I thought it might be fun to play with stencils this week.

I decided to start out by pairing them with gelatos!

 

Now I found a few things out when I was giving this a try. 

First, not all stencils take the gelatos the same

AND

 not all gelatos color on the same stencil the same either.

 

I started off using this Donna Downey poppy stencil that I misted with water.

 

I started off by adding some black in the center.

The black Gelato as you can see worked VERY well on the stencil. 

 It laid down a nice even coating.

 

I then added Blood Orange around the black and outer edges of the flower.

This color didn't go on so well.  It seemed to want to skim over the surface and I couldn't see it real well because of the paper I had under the stencil.

 

To help I let the tip of the gelato sit in a bit of water and started to dab and rub it on the surface of the stencil.  That seemed to leave behind a more even coat than "coloring" the stencil did.

 

Next I spritzed it with another shot of water

then placed a sheet of cardstock over the image.

 

I burnished the paper with my hand and let it set there for about 20-30 seconds to let the Gelatos dissolve and soak into the paper.

 

And when I pulled it up I was left with a beautiful poppy!

 

I wanted to try the metallic as well because I was sure they would be have differently and they did.

I used a Crafters Workshop stencil that I again misted with water. 

 

The gold went on well in the larger areas but not on the smaller fine lined areas so I used the rubbing/dabbing technique I did for the orange above.  You can see how some areas have what looks like puddles of color which is exactly what it is.  The water puddled with the gelatos while the edges were a bit thicker where the gelatos scraped off into the little crevices.

 

I misted and then placed the paper over the stencil.

I burnished and left it set for a few seconds....

 

 

And look at how cool it turned out!

 

As a lark I wanted to see if I could use the gelatos again so I misted, placed the cardstock over the stencil and burnished as before.  IT WORKED!!

 

 

So I did it again to try to fill out the rest of the cardstock and it worked both times.

 

I tried it a third time on a scrap of paper but it was pretty used up by then.

So I'd say that you could get a good 2-3 images and possibly even a 4th from one layer of gelatos.

How cool is that?

 

 

I did try it a third time on a stencil that had more of a tooth to the surface of the stencil.

Those seemed to take the gelatos better than anything but of course I forgot to take photos while I was playing that time.  I'm going to try to remember to do it again and take pics this time.
