Faux Tin Tiles Technique

Faux Vintage Tin Tiles Technique

I don't know about you but I love the look of vintage tin tiles. They are an architectural detail of days gone by that add an extra special something to any space.  Well, today we are going to create our own vintage tin tiles to incorporate into our cards, scrapbooks or other projects!

Supplies:

Embossing Powder (ex. Platinum)
Embossing Ink
Acrylic Paint (ex. Snow Cap)
Stamps (ex. - Impression Obsession)
Cardstock (ex. - Black)
Heat Tool
faux tin tiles 002

Instructions:

1. Stamp image on cardstock using embossing ink.

2. Sprinkle desired color of embossing powder over the image.  Shake off excess and heat to melt.  Let the embossed image cool before moving to the next step.
faux tin tiles 003
faux tin tiles 004

3. After the embossed image has cooled, apply a nice layer of acrylic paint over the image.  You want enough paint so it fills up the image and covers the embossing.
faux tin tiles 005

If you are using the dabber, smooth the paint out so there are no lumps or bumps in the paint.
faux tin tiles 006

4. Let the paint dry until it is almost set...  the time will vary from paint to paint.  Basically just wait until the paint has lost the glossy wet look and has a matte look to it.

5.  After the paint has dried to the matte finish stage, rub off some of the paint until the embossed image just starts to show through.  You can rub as much or as little paint as you would like depending on how you want your finished tiles to look.
faux tin tiles 007

6. Trim your image from the paper and your tile is ready for use!
faux tin tiles 008

Now I created the example on black paper but you can also used white cardstock to create a different look.  Below is a comparison to show the difference between the two...

Left = Black Cardstock
Right = White Cardstock

faux tin tiles 009

You may also use different colors of embossing powders and paints.  These examples were created using copper embossing powder (my fav!!) and various colors of paint.
faux tin tiles 010

And this tile was created using Wild Plum embossing powder on black cardstock w/white paint...
faux tin tiles 012

So you can see by varying the paints, paper, and powders used you could paper your entire house with different looking faux vintage tin tiles ;)

I am going to be gone tomorrow but I will try to get a few finished examples posted soon incorporating these tiles into cards.

Tomorrow is also JFF Friday so be sure to stop by and see what I've created with this weeks stamps!

Have a great evening friends!!

Autumn/Thanksgiving Criss-Cross Card - PLUS!!

YeS!

Today is Wednesday and that means the week is 1/2 over...
only 2 more days till the weekend - LOL!!

Today I wanted to share a criss-cross card but I also wanted to give you a plus...
Plus what you might be asking.  Well there are a few cut-offs left over from making these cards so I put them to use!

Check it out...

Autumn/Thanksgiving
Criss-Cross Card

NOTE: Finished Size - 5"x7" I am using two different colors for the card base...you could use the same color for both flaps if desired.
Supplies:
Cardstock
Stamps (Stampin Up)
Ink
Embellishments (optional)

Directions:
1. Cut one strip of cardstock 5" x 12"'; cut a second strip of cardstock 5" x 10.5".

2. Crease both strips of cardstock at 7".

3. Place one of the strips of cardstock in your cutter.  Cut a diagonal line from the upper corner (by the fold line) to the outside edge as shown.  Repeat for the 2nd strip of cardstock
Note: if you are using textured cardstock and want the texture to be on the outside you will need to cut one strip on the texture side and one strip on the smooth side.
criss cross card 001

Now your cardstock should look like this...
criss cross card 003

Set the cut-off triangles aside.  We will be using them in the "Plus" card.

4. Cut two different pieces of pattern paper 4.75" x 6.75".   Cut both sheets diagonally as you did the cardstock.
criss cross card 004

5. (optional) Ink all of the edges if desired.  Of course I do this using my Ink Blending Tool & Distress Inks.  You can use whatever you like :)

6. Mount one of the pattern paper triangles on one of the cardstock triangles.  Repeat for the other side.
criss cross card 006

7. On the 12" long piece of cardstock mark 3.5" in the center of the inside of the card back.  Mount the second sheet of cardstock to the first lining it up at the 3.5" point.  This should give you a 7" wide card ~ half one color ~ the other half a second color (if you were using two different colors of cardstock) as shown in the photo.
criss cross card 007

8. Affix the right hand flap to the card back along the very bottom edge.  Fold the second flap over and affix it to the first.  You will now have a pocket behind your criss-crossed flaps.

9. Cut a piece of cardstock 4.25" x 6.5". Cut a second piece of cardstock 4" x 6.25" and mount it on the first.  This is your card insert which will fit into the criss cross pocket.  Stamp desired images on this card insert.

10. Stamp desired image for the front of the card.  Cut out and mount where desired.

criss cross card 008
criss cross card 009

The PLUS ~ Now we have all those left over triangles.  You have enough pattern paper to create a second criss cross card just like the first.  You will also have several pieces of colored cardstock left over.  You can use these pieces to create the PLUS card shown below....  You will also notice some of the leaves I made using the Distressed & Glazed Brown Bag Technique.

criss cross card 012

So there you go...a great way to create a beautiful Criss Cross card for any occasion

AND

An extra card from the scraps!

Just think of all the cool stamps you have in your collection that could be used to decorate pumpkins!  They don't even have to be Halloween theme to create a great Halloween display.  Flourish, damask, swirls, roses, etc....  they could all be used to stamp and decoupage your pumpkins!

Stamped & Decoupage Pumpkins!

It's officially Fall so in my book that means it's time to start decorating for Halloween!!!!
Woo Hooo!!!!

Last year around Halloween I saw some awesome pumpkins that were decorated by some very patient person.  She had painted a cool looking flourish, paisley, damask pattern on her pumpkin....using a stencil!!! No freakin' way!  That takes WAY too much time so I was determined to figure out an easier way to do it.

Stamped and Decoupage
Decorated Pumpkins

Supplies:

White or Orange Pumpkins
White Paint (optional)
Decoupage Medium
Rubber Stamps
Archival Ink
Napkins

Instructions:

NOTE: This technique works best with white pumpkins...now I don't know how much the white pumpkins are in your area but in mine the white pumpkins are 2-3x's more expensive than regular orange ones.  Personally I think with a bit of time and white paint I can buy the orange one ;)  LOL!!

1. (optional) If you're working with a white pumpkin you can skip this step.  Wipe off your pumpkin so there is no dust, dirt or debris left anywhere on the pumpkin... This is very important to achieve a good coat of paint.
Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 007

2. (optional) Paint your pumpkin with white acrylic paint and let it dry completely. I used my heat tool to speed drying.  I applied only one coat and it covered pretty good.  I'm sure this will depend on the brand of paint you use but if nec. you can add a second coat.
Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 009

3. Stamp desired image(s) and/or sentiments on tissue paper.  It is important that you use Archival or Staz-On type inks since we will be using decoupage mediums.
Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 001

4. Apply a layer of collage medium (I am using Collage Pague) to the pumpkin where you want your stamped image.
Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 002

5. Gently place the tissue paper over the collage medium and paint a second layer over the napkin to secure.  Smooth any wrinkles with a brush or your finger which is wet with collage medium.   DO NOT over work your tissue paper once it has been applied to the pumpkin.  Once it is wet it will be very fragile!!!!  It can tear easily and could ruin the design.
Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 003

Here is what your pumpkin will look like at this point.  Don't worry that your image looks a bit cloudy...it will dry clear.

Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 004

Now, to finish decorating the pumpkin we're going to use napkins!
You will need to peel the excess white layers of napkin away from the printed layer.  Don't throw these extra layers away...you can keep these white sheets for clean up.

6. Apply a nice layer of collage medium to one side of the pumpkin...
Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 005

7. Gently drape the napkin over the glue.  Begin to smooth and apply a layer of collage medium to the napkin.  Just like the stamped image you don't want to over work the napkin as it will be very fragile once wet!
Stamped Decop. Pumpkins 006

8. Continue adding additional glue/napkins until the entire pumpkin has been covered.  Set aside and let the pumpkin dry completely!

I will be back tomorrow to show you the finished stamped and decoupaged pumpkins!
I hope you stop back in and check em out!

Stampers Quest Holiday Blizzard Give-A-Way - Coming Soon!!!

Stampers Quest Holiday Blizzard Give-A-Way....

I thought I'd tell you about a little give-a-way that I've got planned for October...

Every October Stampers Quest has hosts what they call a Holiday Blizzard.  Basically all of the "guides" (team members) create and share holiday themed projects for the fall/winter season (Oct - Dec).
We are only required to create 2 but I couldn't leave out one of the major holidays so I made 3...one for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I thought I would kick off the holiday season and share these projects with my Ink Stained Friends!!!

When my projects are posted (at some point in October...) I will post a "sneak peek" photo here on my blog as well as a link to my project.

If you'd like to be entered to win that particular project all you have to do is post a comment at that time!
You will have 1 week to post your comment then I pull out a winner :)

Sooooo, be sure to keep your eyes open for those posts since I don't even know when they will show up!

Good Luck Friends!!

World Card Day Winners!!

Thanks to everyone who entered to win the World Card Day Goodie Bags... It was so much fun to read all about your wonderful cards and peek at the ones who left links!  It's such fun to see what everyone is working on.

Well, I have just visited Random.org to pull the winners for the 3 goodie bags to help celebrate World Card Day!!

And here they are....starting with the two smaller goodie bags....

The first winner is ~ #56 - Judith!!!

I make cards all the time! I donate them in bundles of 4 to the Jervasic Cancer Centre in Hamilton, ON. My friend is receiving treatment for ovarian cancer there. The volunteers are wonderful people, and turn out dozens of hats, headscarves, shawls, etc. Well, I can knit, but you'll get awfully cold waiting for my hats, so, I make cards. I figure the patients can get a few of the many thank you cards they need to write done while they are waiting for their treatment. I left 50 bags of 4 cards with them the last time I went, and they were all gone by the next day!

The second winner is #9 ~ Wax Beach Artist!!

I made a birthday card for my lovely daughter 2 weeks ago. When she got the card she called to thank me. During our conversation I told her she might need to fluff up the flower. She said no, it looks good flat. Sigh..

And the winner of the Biggie Size Goodie Bag is.... #63 ~ Elena!!

WOW you are a very generous lady...with material gifts from the heart and with instructions and techniques. Your giving attitude is very evident in how you bless others through the gifts God has given you.

I, too, like to bless the people in my life. so I make cards and send them to everyone. This weekend I made four cards. I have a friend Birthday, two volunteers that help me, and a granddaughter this coming Thursday. And I'm out again!!!

Autumn Felt Flower Pin

Today I have a fun project that is quick, easy and takes only a minimal amount of supplies...
Autumn Felt Flower Pin
I only had one color of felt in my stash (the light brown behind the colored swatches) so rather than go out and buy more I decided to see if I could dye it to the colors I wanted!

I tried a few different methods and the two that worked best are shown...

autumn felt flower pin 001
The maroon and yellow swatches on the bottom were spritzed with Glimmer Mist.  The glimmer part doesn't show up but the color does beautifully.  I think if you mixed up some Distress Re-Inker and water in a little spritz bottle it would work just as well.

The second method that worked well was to rub Distress Inks directly on to the felt.  The brown and orange swatches were created using this technique.

Both worked very well and didn't fade much as it dried.  I tried a few other types of ink and most faded or didn't dry well on the felt.

Supplies:

Felt
Die-Cut or Scissors
Ink (optional)
Hot Glue or Fav. Adhesive
Poker Chip or other Pin Base
Pin Back
Embellishments (for flower center)

Instructions:

1. Die-cut or hand cut several different flower shapes in a variety of sizes.  I used a couple different Sizzix dies.  I also cut a few branches from the bare tree and some leaves from the sunflower die.

autumn felt flower pin 002
2. If necessary, dye your felt to the desired colors.

autumn felt flower pin 003
3. Begin hot gluing your layers to your pin base.  I have a bunch of vintage poker chips I am using for these pins.  Other ideas might be ~ flat game pieces, chipboard, cardboard, bottle caps, TH Fragments, etc... basically anything that is sturdy and has a flat surface to work on.

autumn felt flower pin 004
4. Continue layering on each flower building it up as you go...

autumn felt flower pin 005
I like to use the flower die I have because of the hole in the center...it allows me to push some of the flowers in the hole giving the upper layers a bit of fullness and dimension instead of just plain flat flowers.

autumn felt flower pin 006
5. Add desired embellishment to the center of each flower.  This could be any number of things....faux gemstones or pearls, game pieces, brads, buttons, bingo chips, TH Fragments, etc.

6. Glue a pin back to the base of your flower pin.

And here is how they turned out....
(NOTE: the glue wasn't quite dry on the pearls so one is out of place...I moved it back into place to dry as you can see from the individual photo.)

What do you think?
Pretty cool for something so quick and easy huh?
How would you like to grab one of these little Autumn beauties for yourself?
To be entered to be one of three winners all you need to do is post a comment telling me what your favorite fall flower is!
You have until 10-3-10 to post your comment!
Good Luck Friends!!!

Sewing for Dad

Happy Autumn Everyone!!!

autumn003

I hope you've had a wonderful start to this my favorite season of the year.

Today in Indiana it doesn't exactly feel like the first day of fall...it's in the upper 80's!!!

Yesterday we tied the record (93) and tomorrow we're supposed to set a new record!!!

What the @#*(&%^(!!!!

Don't quite understand what's up with that but guess you gotta take what you can get.

Well since we "Should" be having cooler temps this time of year I thought I ought to get my butt in gear and finish a project that I've been putting off for a while now.

Let me explain a bit...I'm not a very good seamstress...

Honestly, I hate to sew clothing... (love to sew paper though!!)

When I was pregnant with my first child I *thought* I'd sew some of my own clothing...let's just say after my first painful, discouraging attempt I bought all of my cloths!

BUT, for some strange reason my whole family thinks I can sew...I guess because dh repairs industrial sewing machines ~ so everyone assumes I can sew. (NOT!!!!)

Anyway, they always bring me sewing projects...

I always do what I'm asked but I never have a good time of it and if there were anyone in our area I would gladly pay whomever to sew them for me - LOL!

Well, a couple months ago Dad brought over a new denim jacket and a very old denim jacket...one from the late 60's as a matter of fact. It was the jacket that he had worn when he was in the Navy and had all of his mission patches (I think that's what they are called) sewn on it. Needless to say he's grown a bit since then so he wanted me to transfer all of those patches over to the new jacket and add a couple extra patches ~ 15 patches in all. (omg!!!)

Well I've been putting it off and putting it off because 1) I knew it was too hot to wear it and 2) I suck at sewing!

Today I decided it was time to finish it up...it took me most of the day ~ 7:30-2:30 ~ but here it is...

All of the patches except the two on the front are sewn on. The 2 on the front are attached with Streuter Glue Film!!! I couldn't sew them on because of the pocket placement on the coat (the old coat didn't have any upper pockets). The two black patches on the arms are the new ones...

Sewing for Dad 001

Sewing for Dad 002

So while I don't have anything crafty to share today at least I got this huge (for me) project out of the way!

WHEW!!!!

What a relief!!!

Do you ever have projects "given" to you that you just dread?
