Metallic Easter Eggs

Happy Day Everyone!

Since St. Patty's Day is done and past I thought it would be a great time to start on some fun Spring Time / Easter Decorations!

So today I wanted to share Metallic Easter Eggs with you.

CAUTION: Please PLEASE keep in mind this technique (or any of the other techniques I'm going to be sharing in the coming days) should not be used on eggs meant for human consumption. Egg shells are porous so whatever you put on the outside can end up on the inside. I don't know for sure if it would be bad for you or so please don't chance it. Better safe than sorry.

Supplies:

Eggs

Adirondack Alcohol Ink

Ink Applicator

Adirondack Metal Mixatives

Alcohol Blending Solution

Instructions:

1. First you will need to prepare the eggs. To do so, wash the eggs thoroughly. Poke a hole on each end of your egg. I just use my paper piercer but you could use whatever you have on hand. Just make sure it is VERY sharp so it punctures the egg instead of cracks it.

2. After you have created the holes I like to stick a toothpick into one end and scramble the egg. I know that sounds weird but trust me, it will make blowing them a whole lot easier! Swish the toothpick around for 15-20 seconds to ensure the yoke has been broken up sufficiently.

3. Blow the yoke and whites out of the egg...this is harder than it sounds depending on the size of hole you poked in the shell.

4. This step is optional but I like to wash the insides of my eggs once they have been blown. I can't stand the though of the gooey insides still in there. I wash my eggs by submerging them in a bowl filled with water with one hole pointed up. You will immediately that tiny air bubbles begin escaping from the hole. Keep it under water until it sits on the bottom and no more bubbles are visible. Your egg is now full of water. I leave my eggs sit in the water 5-10 minutes.

5. Blow the water out of each egg and let them set overnight to dry.

6. Next, determine what colors of Adirondack Alcohol Ink you will be using with each Metallic Mixative. I used the following combinations:

Pearl MM - Raspberry, Pink Sherbet, Wild Plum

Copper MM - Pesto, Lettuce, Butterscotch

Gold MM - Peach Bellini, Mountain Rose, Sunset Orange

Silver MM - Sailboat Blue, Cloudy Blue, Purple Twilight

You of course can use any color combo you like.

7. Apply the desired Adirondack Alcohol Ink colors to each egg using the Ink Applicator & Felt just as you would on paper. Add a drop or two of each color to the felt and dab the ink onto the shell gently. Rotate until the entire egg has been covered with AI.

8. I like to add the Metallic Mixative separately to create more shine. Simply apply a drop of the MM to the same felt used to apply the Alcohol Ink. Add a drop or two of Alcohol Blending Solution and dab over the existing AI's. Add as much or as little as desired.

After you have added the Metallic Mixatives let the eggs dry completely.

Here is what your finished eggs will look like.... the pearl MM doesn't show up very well in the photos ~ it is more of an iridescent effect but the Copper, Gold & Silver show up very nicely!

  6. "egg-cellent" idea! Years ago I used to save all my eggs like this and decorate them in various ways to sell at craft shows. I think I like your eggs better than anything I came up with! I may just have to give it another go! I love these :)

  9. Thanks everyone!! I have a couple more egg ideas I'd like to share if I have time.

    Someone mentioned they have banty chicken eggs and was going to give this a try! How cool would that be, mini easter eggs :)
