Vintage Valentine's Cards

Today I wanted to share a few vintage Valentine's Day cards I have in my collection.  It's so much fun to look back to see how different things are/were.  These range in date from the late 40's early 50's ~ I have others from this time period as well as several earlier examples that I will share in the future.  Hope you enjoy them :)

Just For Fun Friday - One more Valentine & a Touch of Spring!

Valentine's Day is Monday and since this is the last JFF Friday before then I thought I'd toss in one final JFF Valentine's Day card along with a couple spring-y cards to warm you a bit after this week of unbelieveablely fridged temps.

All of the hearts were colored with Alcohol Inks.  The small hearts were stamped with the lace doily.  The girl is from the UM Pin Up sheet.

JFF 2-11-11 007

I thought this card would be nice for any occassion...thank you, thinking of you, birthday's, etc.  The image was colored with Distress Inks but I added a bit of shine with Liquid Pearls to the centers of the flowers and the bug wings.

JFF 2-11-11 004

Finally a beautiful sight along the road sides and in gardens here in Indiana during Spring and early Summer...bright orange daylilies!  I love them and even though each bloom only lasts for a day the profusion of blooms on each stalk lasts for weeks.  They will be a welcome sight when they finally arrive again this year.

JFF 2-11-11 002

If I have time I am planning on sharing a few really quick and easy Valentine's Day card ideas with you either this afternoon or sometime this weekend.

Tomorrow is Stickles Saturaday...another fun card incorporating one of my favorite products ~ Stickles Glitter Glue.

Till then ~ have a super weekend Friends!!

Altered Chess Charm

Angelic wanted to see a chess piece turned into a charm.  For some reason I knew I could do this quite easily.  Now, I'm using plastic chess pieces.  I think you could do this with other types of chess pieces if you had the correct drill bit for the material.  Anyway, I think it turned out pretty cool...

First I drilled  a hole down through the center of the charm.  I am drilling a pawn in the photo but I also made one from the Queen (which you will see below); rook; and the knight.  They all worked great.

Chess Charm 001

(optional) To spice my chess piece up a bit I drilled 4 holes around the bottom rim.  I wanted to be able to add several "hangy down parts" but this is not necessary.

Chess Charm 002

To make the hanger and add a dangle coming out of the bottom of the chess piece I constructed this segmented charm/finding.  It's an eye pin which I will push up through the center and make the hanging loop at the top.  Next is a piece of chain which will be in the body of the chess piece.  Finally I have a second eye pin that I strung vintage faux pearls (from an old necklace I tore apart) with a charm added to the bottom.

Chess Charm 004

I then made 4 pearl dangles which will be added to the rim along with bits of black chain.

And here is how the rim turned out....

Chess Charm 008

I added the center dangle, made the hanging loop and added a few more pearls and faux gem stones for a little bling to finish the charm off.

Chess Charm 016

I know this is a bit over the top for some people but after all...she is a queen ;)
I think it will be pretty cool with a few more royal charms added on each side.

What do you think?

You could go in virtually any direction with these charms.  You could add color to the chess piece prior to adding the goodies.

Challenge Charm - Marbles turned into a Charm!!

O.k..I was so excited to see some of the items people suggested for charms.  Two of them sparked my interest right away because ideas popped into my head right away.  That's what I've got for you today but I wanted to let you know that I have ideas for a few other items people suggested so those are on their way ;)

Carolyn mentioned turning a marble into a charm....and here you go....

Last year after Christmas I bought an interesting looking tree garland that had nifty spiral wire "cages" that held beads in the center.  I KNEW they would be awesome charms if I found something I wanted to put inside the spiral.....  MARBLES!!!!!!   Now, I know there are jewelry spirals available out there at jewelry making sites but hey, this works and it was way cheaper ;)

(NOTE:  I didn't have any neat marbles so I used a plastic one.)

Check it out....

Marble Charm 1

I inserted the marble by gently pulling apart the spiral near the center.  The wire is very springy and opens easily but bounces back into place to hold the marble securely.  I then used a head pin with a small bead on it to make the hanger.  I inserted the head pin through the center hole at the top of the spiral cage and created the loop for the hanger.

Marble Charm 2

So there you go Carolyn...
a very quick and easy way to turn marbles into charms!

Questions about charms....

Several people have e-mailed or posted questions about some of the charms I've been sharing so I thought I'd answer them all in one area in case others were wondering as well....

Wire Bird Nest Charm ~

Q - What size wire did you use?

A - I used size 26 by Artistic Wire in Bronze.  I have made these charms from other sizes in the past.  I would say as long as you can slip your beads on the wire you're good to go!

Q - Where did you get the little tag you stamped on?

A - This was a tag left over from a scrapbook project I made several years ago. (I bought them at Wal-Mart)  Other ideas for the tag would be to die-cut your own (sizzix has a great dog tag style die); look at non-crafting sites for aluminum tags...you can usually buy them in bulk far cheaper than the "craft" price!

Bottle Cap Charms

Q - Where did you find those little gears?

A - They are from old watches that I tore apart.  I didn't throw anything away when I took them apart...I have the gears and "guts" in one jar, watch faces in another, watch cases in yet another (watch later this week for a charm using these cases!!).

I buy old watches anywhere I can find them...you can get some great "lots" on e-bay, at flea markets or second hand stores.  Sometimes you can even find them at garage or tag sales.  I'm always on the look out for things to alter :)

Q - How do you keep the Glossy Accents from running out the holes?

A - I always make a small Glossy Accents "dam" around the hole before I fill it.  I simply draw a small line around the hole and let the GA dry completely.  Then I go ahead and fill the rest of the bottle cap up.  For whatever reason the new GA usually doesn't go any further than the dam I made to begin with.  Works like a (ahem) charm ;)  LOL!!!

Q - Did you use ink jet images or laser images?  Why didn't your images fade like mine do when you used the Glossy Accents?

A - Yes, I did print my own images.  I seal them with Judikins Micro Glaze before I use them.  It creates a water proof seal that resists the GA and leaves the image looking perfect every time!  Micro Glaze also works great for images that you might use in wet technique collage or altered art projects.

NOTE: I'm so glad that so many of you have had a similar experience with your projects (the bottle cap flying around).  It's good to know I'm not alone - LOL!!

Steampunk Faux Fuse Charm

Q - What size is the hose?

A - I measured it and it's .25" (1/4") outside diameter, the inside of the hose is 4 mm.  I'm not sure what size that is in inches.

Q - Where did you buy the hose?

A - O.k...I hate to admit this but I had a case of pneumonia last winter and had to take breathing treatments.  It had a hose connected to the machine that delivered the meds.  I was told to throw the hose away when I was done...well, you know me ~ I can't throw something away when it *might* have a good use so I washed it out and tucked it away in my stash till now - LOL!!

You can also buy it at the hardware store... it's really cheap, just a few cents a foot.  Elaine had a good idea about using fish tank hose.   But just about any hardware, home improvement, farm store or auto parts store carries clear tubing.

Bingo Chip, Pen Nib, Monopoly Charms -

Q - Where do you find the vintage game pieces (games) (nibs)?

A -  I usually buy them at thrift stores, second hand shops, flea markets, auctions, tag or garage sales, etc.  I always keep my eyes peeled for games or items that might be used in collage or altered art projects.

If I'm looking for something specific I also watch e-bay.  Sometimes (not always) you can find a great bargain...Remember two things....always check out how much shipping is and set a max bid price ahead of time so you don't get caught up in the moment and end up paying way more than you intend to spend.

I think that was most of the questions...if I missed one or you have other questions, please feel free to ask.  I'm always willing to help when I can!

Altered Charm Pins

Well I've shared several different ideas on altered charms over the last two weeks and I wanted to re-cap and share what I've shared so far...  In pin form of course ;)

Altered Charm Pin 003

Altered Charm Pin 005

List of Altered Charms (and links) so far....

I have loads more ideas to share but the other day I promised that I'd be giving away some of these charms to not only the people who have joined the Altered Charm Swap  but all of Ink Stains readers.

Sooooo if you'd like to be entered for a chance to win one of these two altered charm pins simply post a comment below telling me what your favorite vintage item is to use on your cards, collages, scrapbook pages, altered art projects, etc.    It could be vintage sheet music, vintage buttons, old maps, maybe tickets, or pen nibs or anything really.

If you'd like to have your name entered into the drawing twice you could also name a vintage item that you'd like turned into a charm.   I'm not promising I'll be able to create them but it would still be fun to hear about them and give me something to work on for the future.

If you'd like a third entry post a link to this thread on your own blog, a forum or other place you like to hang out on the web.  Be sure to come back and leave a link here so I know you've posted it.

You have until 2-25-11 (yes, that's the due date for the Charm Swap) to post your answer(s).

Good Luck Everyone!!!
