The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet,
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams..." William Butler Yeats

He that is of the opinion that money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money.

He who comes with a story to you brings two away from you.

He who loses a friend, loses more;
He who loses faith, loses all.

Here's health to your enemies' enemies!

A clean shirt
A clean conscience
And a punt in our pocket.

Here’s to a fellow who smiles
When life runs along like a song.
And here’s to the lad who can smile
When everything goes dead wrong.

Here's to a long life and a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.

and another one!

Here's to women's kisses,

and to whiskey, amber clear;

Not as sweet as a woman's kiss,

but a darn sight more sincere!

Here's to you and here's to me.
May we never disagree.
But should we start to fight and 'cuss,

Here's to me.
Here’s to you and yours,

And to mine and ours,

Across you and yours,

I hope you and yours will do

As much for mine and ours,

As mine and ours have done

For you and yours!

I-rish your smilin' face were at my door!

Ireland, it’s the one place on earth
That heaven has kissed
With melody, mirth,
And meadow and mist.

No other place under Heaven.
And no man can touch its sod
Or breathe its air without becoming
Better or worse.

That's the Irish Wish for You!

Life is like a cup of tea,
it’s all in how you make it!

Like the goodness of the five loaves and two fishes,
Which God divided among the five thousand men,
May the blessing of the King who so divided
Be upon our share of this common meal.

Listen to the sound of the river and you will get a trout.

Lucky stars above you,
Sunshine on your way,
Many friends to love you,
Joy in work and play-
Laughter to outweigh each care,
In your heart a song-
And gladness waiting everywhere
All your whole life long!

May all your troubles be little ones
and all your little ones be trouble free.

May all your ups and downs be under the sheets.

May brooks and trees and singing hills
Join in the chorus, too.
And every gentle wind that blows
Send happiness to you.

May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

May God grant you always...
A sunbeam to warm you,
A moonbeam to charm you,
A sheltering angel, so nothing can harm you.

May God grant you many years to live, for sure he must be knowing, the earth has angels all too few and heaven is overflowing...

May good luck be your friend
IN whatever you do.

A stranger to you.
May I see you grey and combing your grandchildren’s hair.

And happiness be with you now,
And bless you evermore.

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.

May the roof above you never fall in,

And those gathered beneath it never fall out.

May the roof over your heads be as well thatched

As those inside are well matched.

May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.

May the saint protect ye-
An' sorrow neglect ye,
An' bad luck to the one
That doesn't respect ye
t' all that belong to ye,
An long life t' yer honor-
That's the end of my song t' ye!

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun.
And find your shoulder to light on.
To bring you luck, happiness and riches.
Today, tomorrow and beyond.

May there always be work for your hands to do,
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine warm on your windowpane,
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you,
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

May there be a generation of children on the children of your children. Health and long life to you, land without rent to you, a child every year to you, and death in Old Ireland.

May there be a fox on your fishing hook
And a hare on your bait
And may you kill no fish
Until St. Brigid’s Day.

May there be spring enough in your life
to outlast the winters;
May there be guitars (and drums) enough
to lift your spirits whenever you need it;
May you be gentle enough to comfort those who are hurting,
But revolutionary enough to bring heaven to those who need it now.
May there always be a leprechaun near you
to bring out laughter and dance and the child in you.
And may God always have room enough for you in the palm of his hand!

May you always have a clean shirt, a clear conscience, and enough coins in your pocket to buy a pint!

May you always have money in your pocket
a woman to love
and a smile on your face.

a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,
laughter to cheer you, those you love near you,
and all your heart might desire.

May you always walk in sunshine.
May you never want for more.

May you be in heaven a full half hour

before the devil knows your dead.

May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies and quick to make friends. And may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.

The Shamrocks that grow.
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.

A good woman to love you.
And a wink from the God above.

May you get all your wishes but one,

so that you will always have something to strive for!

May you have all the happiness

and luck that life can hold—

And at the end of all your rainbows

may you find a pot of gold.

May you have a bright future - as the chimney sweep said to his son.

and strength with your step,
and may each season have a reason
to celebrate your faith in mankind!

May you have love that never ends,
lots of money, and lots of friends.
Health be yours, whatever you do,
and may God send many blessings to you!

May you have nicer legs than yours under the table before the new spuds are up.

May you have:
No frost on your spuds,
No worms on your cabbage.
May your goat give plenty of milk.
And if you inherit a donkey,
May she be in foal.

May you have the hindsight to know where you've been,

The foresight to know where you are going,

And the insight to know when you have gone too far.

May you have warm words on a cold evening,
a full moon on a dark night,
and the road downhill all the way to your door.

May you live a long life
Full of gladness and health,
With a pocket full of gold
As the least of you wealth.

May the dreams you hold dearest,
Be those which come true,
The kindness you spread,
Keep returning to you.

May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks.
May your heart be as light as a song.

That stay with you all year long.

May your troubles be less
And your blessings be more.
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door.

Men are like bagpipes: no sound comes from them until they're full.

Mere words do not feed the friars.

Morning is the time to pity the sober. The way they're feeling then is the best they're going to feel all day.

Mothers [fathers] hold their children’s hands for just a little while...
And their hearts forever.

My friends are the best friends

Loyal, willing and able.

Now let’s get to drinking!

All glasses off the table!
Nature breaks through the eyes of the cat.

Nature magically suits a man to his fortunes, by making them the fruit of his character.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Necessity knows no law.

Need teaches a plan.

No man can prosper without his woman's leave.

No son is as good as his father in his sister's eyes.
No father is as good as his son in his mother's eyes.

Nothing is as easy as it looks.
Everything takes longer than you expect.
And if anything can go wrong,
It will at the worst possible moment.

Now sweetly lies old Ireland
Emerald green beyond the foam,
Awakening sweet memories,
Calling the heart back home.

Oh, he occasionally takes an alcoholiday.--Wilde

Patience is poultice for all wounds.

People live in each other's shelter.

Practice makes perfect, there's many do think, but a man's not too perfect when he's practiced at drink.

Praise and scold in equal measure,
If your family you treasure.

Put silk on a goat, and it's still a goat.

Quiet people are well able to look after themselves.

Saint Patrick was a gentleman,

Who through strategy and stealth,

Drove all the snakes from Ireland,

Here’s a toasting to his health.

But not too many toastings

Lest you lose yourself and then

Forget the good Saint Patrick

And see all those snakes again.

'Beannachtam na Feile Padraig!'

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Saint Patrick's Breastplate
Christ be with me
Christ before me
Christ behind me
Christ in me
Christ beneath me
Christ above me
Christ on my right
Christ on my left
Christ where I lie
Christ where I sit
Christ where I arise
Christ in the heart of every man
who thinks of me
Christ in the mouth of every man
who speaks of me
Christ in every eye that sees me
Christ in every ear that hears me
Salvation is of the Lord.
Said in the morning when rising...
Christ be with me,
be after me,
be before me,
and be at my right and left hand.
May everything I do be for Christ.
Said when dressing...
Lord, clothe me with the robes of innocence.
Said during thunder and lightning...
O Lord, be between us and harm and protect us from the harm of the world

'Sláinte!'
To your health!

'Sláinte chuig na fir, agus go mairfidh na mná go deo.'
Health to the men, and may the women live forever!

'Sláinte go saol agat,
Bean ar do mhian agat.
Leanbh gach blian agat,
is solas na bhflaitheas tareis antsail seo agat.'

Land without rent to you,
A child every year to you,
And the light of heaven after this world for you.

Sliocht sleachta ar shliocht bhur sleachta.
"Blessings on your posterity."

The best way to get rid of your enemies is God's way, by loving them.

The day will come when the cow will have use for her tail.

The devil invented Scotch whiskey to make the Irish poor.

The family that has no skeleton in a cupboard has buried it instead.

The health of all Ireland
and of County Mayo,
And when that much is dead,
may we still be on the go.

The hole is more honorable than the patch.

The lesson learned by a tragedy is a lesson never forgotten.

The light heart lives long.

The man with the boots does not mind where he places his foot.

The mills of God grind slowly but they grind finely.

The raggy colt often made a powerful horse.

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.

The reason the Irish are always fighting each other
Is they have no other worthy opponents.

The smallest thing outlives the human being.

The truth comes out when the spirit goes in.

The wearer best knows where the shoe pinches.

The well fed does not understand the lean.

The words that I've said I meant when I spoke
and remember my words of wisdom
feck'em if you can't take a joke.

The work praises the man.

The world would not make a racehorse of a donkey.

There are good ships,

and there are wood ships,

The ships that sail the sea.

But the best ships, are friendships,

And may they always be.

There are many good reasons for drinking,
One has just entered my head-
If a man doesn't drink when he's living,
How the hell can he drink when he's dead?

There are only two kinds of people in the world,
The Irish
And those who wish they were.

There comes a time when you must take the bull by the tail and face the situation squarely.

There is hope from the sea, but none from the grave.

There is no fireside like your own fireside.

There is no luck except where there is discipline.

There is no need like the lack of a friend.

There is no strength without unity.

These things, I warmly wish for you-
Someone to love, some work to do,
A bit of o' sun, a bit o' cheer.
And a guardian angel always near.

Thirst is a shameless disease so here's to a shameful cure.

Thirst is the end of drinking and sorrow is the end of drunkenness.

Three diseases without shame: Love, itch and thirst.

Time is a great story teller.

‘Tis better to buy a small bouquet
And give to your friend this very day,
Than a bushel of roses white and red
To lay on his coffin after he’s dead.

To live above with the Saints we love,

Ah, that is the purest glory.

To live below with the Saints we know,

Ah, that is another story!

Two shorten the road.

Two thirds of the work is the semblance.

Walk straight, my son - as the old crab said to the young crab.

We attract what we love & what we fear.

We cannot share this sorrow
If we haven’t grieved a while.
Nor can we feel another’s joy
Until we’ve learned to smile

We drink to your coffin. May it be built from the wood of a hundred year old oak tree that I shall plant tomorrow.

What is Irish diplomacy?
It’s the ability to tell a man to go to hell,
So that he will look forward to making the trip.

When a twig grows hard it is difficult to twist it. Every beginning is weak.

When fire is applied to a stone it cracks.

When money's tight and hard to get,

and your horse is also ran,

When all you have is a heap of debt,

a pint of plain is your only man.

When the apple is ripe it will fall.

When the drop (drink) is inside, the sense is outside.

When the first light of sun-
Bless you.
When the long day is done-
Bless you.
In your smiles and your tears-
Bless you.
Through each day of your years-
Bless you.

When the liquor was gone the fun was gone.

When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

Whenever there is happiness
Hope you'll be there too,
Wherever there are friendly smiles
Hope they'll smile on you,
Whenever there is sunshine,
Hope it shine especially for you to make each day
for you as bright as it can be.

Wherever you go and whatever you do,
May the luck of the Irish be there with you.

Wine divulges truth.

Wishing you a rainbow
For sunlight after showers—
Miles and miles of Irish smiles
For golden happy hours—
Shamrocks at your doorway
For luck and laughter too,
And a host of friends that never ends

Beeswax Collage Basics - Pt V

We're in the final steps of our beeswax collage!!

Here is what it currently looks like...

beeswax 5 001

Highlighting Stamped Beeswax Images

Today I wanted to start off by sharing a couple ways to highlight the images we stamped into the beeswax.

For images that have a large stamped surface such as this one...

beeswax 5 002

You can easily paint the image in using acrylic paints...

beeswax 5 005

beeswax 5 006

For more intricate designs such as this image...

beeswax 4 006

You can rub the paint over the image working the paint into all of the cracks and crevices.

beeswax 5 008

I love this particular look...it gives the image/collage a vintage feel.

beeswax 5 009

Cleaning Beeswax from Rubber Stamps

As I mentioned yesterday I wanted to show you how easy it is to remove excess beeswax from your stamps. This stamp has quite a bit of wax remaining on the image... It would be impossible to get a nice clean stamped image if this wax was left on the stamp.

beeswax 5 020

To remove, simply melt the wax with a heat tool and wipe away the molten wax with a soft cloth. Continue until you no longer see any wax on the stamp (it will look shiny when it's hot).

beeswax 5 021

Proof is in the pudding....all the wax is gone and you're left with a perfectly stamped image!

beeswax 5 022

Dimensional Beeswax Embellishments

One last thing I wanted to show you for this collage ~ how to create dimensional embellishments from beeswax.

I am using a Mold n Pour mold ~

beeswax 5 010

Simply pour in the melted beeswax and let it cool.

beeswax 5 011

Once it is cooled gently pull the sides of the mold down to release the beeswax piece.

beeswax 5 012

You'll notice that there is a bit of flashing (excess beeswax around the edges). This is easily removed with a sharp tool or even your fingernail if it's long enough.

beeswax 5 013

Add color to your creation by adding Perfect Pearls...

beeswax 5 014

beeswax 5 016

To add to your collage, add a dot of hot wax

beeswax 5 017

And immediately press the embellishment into the wax.

beeswax 5 018

Removing the Sticky Feel from your Beeswax Collage

If after you have finished your collage and you notice there is a lingering sticky feel on some areas of the collage you can take care of this by dusting with Perfect Pearls or Talc. I prefer to use Perfect Pearls which adds color and shimmer at the same time!

beeswax 5 019

Here is a photo of the finished collage....I couldn't get a photo w/o the flash so it's a bit difficult to see. Tomorrow when it's sunny I'll take another picture in the natural light.

beeswax 5 023

So there you go...

I hope you all enjoyed this tutorial.

I know it took a while and I know some people are over beeswax but there are just so many things to share I would hate to leave something out and have someone get frustrated because I failed to mention one thing or another.

I will put down the brush and walk away from the beeswax for a bit ;) LOL!!

Tomorrow if I get them all typed up I'm planning on sharing a few Irish Toasts since we're only a few weeks away from St. Patty's Day.

Sunday of course I'll have more vintage postcards to share :)

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Beeswax Questions

I've gotten several questions about beeswax in the last couple days and thought I'd share them with you....

Q - is this the same as encaustic wax?

A - No, encaustic was is a seperate art technique/medium. It is a mixture of beeswax, pigments and sometimes additional resins or mediums are added to the mix. This mixture is then used to create entire paintings.

Q - How much beeswax does it take for a collage?

A - Well, that's hard to say...I know, that's a cop out but seriously it all depends on the size of collage and the techniques you choose to incorporate into your collage. I am showing LOTS of techniques in this one collage. Much of the time you would use 2-3 of these techniques but other times you might like to use them all.

If you were creating a simply paper/ephemera collage with 1 or 2 dimensional embellishments I'd say one jar of Ranger beeswax pellets would create 3-4 ~ 8"x8" sized collages. Possibly more if you're not as messy as I am ;)

It really does go a long way since you can use your heat gun to submerge many layers of paper into one or two layers of wax.

Q - How hot is the wax? / Is it safe for kids?

A - Beeswax has a fairly low melt temperature. If you get a drop of wax on your skin it won't burn you say like grease or UTEE would. As far as children I would say as long as the kids understand that the melt pot is extremely hot and will burn them and under adult supervision they would be fine. It's a very forgiving material so if a mistake was made it's easily corrected... very kid friendly on that point.

Q - Can I mix colors into my wax?

A - YES! I haven't gotten that far but yes, you can mix all sorts of pigments into the beeswax to create some awesome effects :)

I think that's most of the questions for now...if I forgot anyone, please let me know and I'll be sure to post :)

Beeswax Collage Basics - Pt IV

Today is part IV of our Beeswax Collage tutorial ~ if you're just stopping in here are links to the previous posts...

(Intro to Beeswax, Tools and Basic Paper Collage)

(Adding Naturals & Dimensional Embellishments)

(Blending Excess Wax & Adding Bling w/Beeswax)

Today we're going to be adding texture to the collage, stamping IN the wax and stamping ON the wax so let's begin!
Adding Texture using Beeswax
You can add texture using beeswax and sooooo many different items. I'm going to be using sequins waste material but you could use any type of mesh material, paper doilies, burlap, etc. There are just so many fun things you can either press into hot wax or apply the wax over (like I'm going to share below). Just look around your house to find unique textures ~ I'm sure you'll find loads!
Here you can see our corner...rather plain and the chipboard showing through in several areas. We'll fix that right up!
Instructions:
1. Place the sequins waste material (or other texture material) over the desired area.

beeswax 3 011

2. Paint the beeswax over the mesh. (Beeswax has a very low melt temp so it should be safe for most materials but always test it first.)

beeswax 3 012

3. After the wax has cooled for a few seconds (10-15) gently peel the mesh off the collage. NOTE - no worries if some of the wax lifts off...it's not meant to be perfect.

beeswax 3 013

You'll have a way cool beeswax texture left behind!!

beeswax 3 014

4. (optional) Now if this texture is too harsh for your collage or the look you're going for, you can gently heat it with a craft tool to soften the edges for a more natural look.

beeswax 3 015

And it will look something like this...

beeswax 3 019

Pretty cool huh?

Just think of all the fun textures you could incorporate!

Stamping IN Beeswax

Here we have another unattractive edge that really needs help....

beeswax 3 009

So we're going to take care of it by stamping into beeswax! Now I've heard lots of people say you can't use acrylic stamps for this process. I have successfully used both rubber and acrylic stamps on beeswax. Again, beeswax has such a low melt temperature that it is perfectly safe for both types of stamps.

Instructions:
1. Apply a thick layer of beeswax to the area where you will be stamping. I usually just pick up the wax with my brush and drip it where desired. Some people choose to pour it over the surface but I find it uses more than necessary. Whatever works for you is fine.

beeswax 3 016

2. Let the beeswax cool until it has a nice crust ~ about 15-20 seconds.

beeswax 3 017

3. Firmly press the stamp into the warm beeswax and leave it there. Let the beeswax cool ~ about 40 seconds or so.

beeswax 3 018

4. Gently peel the stamp away from the collage to reveal the stamped image!

beeswax 3 020

5. You will notice in the photo above there are extra little bits of wax where it pooled or got squeezed out by the stamp. While the wax is still a bit warm you can simply use your finger to rub or smooth them away. Remember to add any excess wax back into the meltpot to be reused.

beeswax 3 021

6. If you stamped by an edge you may end up with extra little bits which were squeezed off the side. You'll need to use a sharp tool to carefully scrape the excess away to create nice clean crisp edges.

beeswax 3 025

Here are a couple finished examples of our stamped beeswax....
beeswax 3 027

This example was stamped using a Fancy Pants acrylic swirl stamp.

beeswax 3 026

Tomorrow I'll share a couple ways to enhance these stamped images. I wanted to share how to clean stamps if bits of wax were left in the crevices of your stamps. Of course when I want it to happen I get perfectly clean images. So I'll be sharing how to remove the wax from your stamps and other tools as well.

Stamping ON Beeswax

I love to stamp on beeswax and you can go about it in a few ways. Today I'm going to show you examples of stamping with acrylic paint and Archival Ink. You simply ink up your stamp as you normally would and stamp on the surface. I always save the stamping for one of the last steps because if additional layers of beeswax is added over these images it can distort or destroy these stamped images.

Adirondack Acrylic Dabber - If you don't have a dabber you can use regular acrylic paint ~ simply apply it to the stamp using your fingertip.

beeswax 4 001

beeswax 4 002

beeswax 4 003

You can also stamp using Archival Ink or Staz-On inks ~ it will produce a lighter almost ghostly image. I've never used dye inks but I'm sure it would work...your image may be faint but still add an interesting effect.

beeswax 4 004

beeswax 4 006

So there you go!

Tomorrow as I mentioned I want to share a couple ways to enhance your stamped images, how to clean your stamps after they have been used in beeswax.

Hope you stop back in and check it out!

SHAUN WHITE = GOLD!!!!!!!!!!

WOOO HOOO!!!!!!!!!!

OMG ~ that guy is simply

AMAZING!!!!

Did you see his amazing run?

I just can't believe it's humanly possible to do some of the things he accomplishes!

What a show!!!!!!

SHAUN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

Beeswax Collage Basics - Pt III

Today on our Beeswax Collage Basics I wanted to start by sharing what our collage looks like so far.... I know I mentioned stamping in the wax in addition to blending in excess wax but forgot that I wanted to share a bit about adding in glittery goodies to the collage.

beeswax 3 001

Blending Excess Wax

beeswax 3 002

beeswax 3 003

You'll notice the areas where the dimensional items were added there is a noticeable thicker layer of beeswax. While you could leave it as is there are a few things you can do to help blend this in better.

The technique I use most often is very simply to heat with my craft tool. I try to focus the heat not necessarily on the dimensional objects themselves but around the edges. This allows the edges to melt and blend in with the wax in the surrounding areas.

beeswax 3 004

As you can see it blended the wax very well and no further work was needed.

beeswax 3 006

If by chance you do find an area where there is excessive wax you can always scrape away a small amount of the wax* prior to heating the edges. After the excess has been removed you will be able to heat and blend as was done above.

*NOTE: Whenever you remove wax from your collage don't throw it away...it can be added right back into the melt pot to be re-used! There is no waste with this craft :)

Adding Bling to Your Beeswax Collage

If you're like me, you love to add a little bit of bling to your projects. Now when I talk about bling, it's not necessarily faux gemstones or glitter. Don't get me wrong...these would be great in your collage but if you have visited here very often, you know how much I LOVE Mica!! I like to think of it as Mother Nature's Bling ;) So, that's what I wanted to show you. You can of course take these basic steps and incorporate ~ glitter, glass glitter, micro or seed beads, gravel, mini shells, etc. It's all good!

1. Determine where on the collage you would like to add your bling.

2. Hold the heat tool over the wax until you see it just begin to melt. With your other hand
(Since this is a two handed technique I couldn't get any good photos so you'll just have to imagine my 3rd hand here sprinkling the mica flakes onto the wax.) sprinkle in this case mica flakes over the molten wax.

beeswax 3 008

3. Remove the heat source and let cool.

4. Once the wax has cooled, shake off excess bling and (Optional) if desired reheat to sink the bling further into the wax.

Here are a couple more examples where I added Mica Flakes to the collage....

beeswax 3 023

beeswax 3 029

Our collage is really coming along nicely!

Tomorrow I'll share how to stamp in beeswax as well as a couple different examples of how to stamp on beeswax.

Hope you'll join me then!

Beeswax Collage Metal Tin

Cher has asked about using beeswax on metal tins so I whipped one up really quickly using a few bits and scraps I had laying on my desk.

***Disclaimer...this was made really quickly so I didn't take time to smooth out any of the wax or make it look really pretty. It's just for technique and test results. Not something I'd normally share but I'm short on time today so I will make another in the coming days which is more presentable.***

beeswax 3 031

beeswax 3 032

I used a tin that had writing on the lid (it was actually a gift card tin from Christmas). Some of the writing came through after I added my layer of paper, subsequent images hid most of it. Something to keep in mind in case you are going with a particular theme. If you don't want the tins colors/text coming through in your collage you will need to remove it using whatever method desired or apply a coat of gesso to cover the writing. Totally up to you.

As far as adhesion it worked perfectly... I chose to fold the paper over the edges of the lid but a word of caution. The lid (since it's metal) will heat up very quickly. If you heat it too much the paper you fold over on the edges will let go and need to be reattached. No biggie, just something to keep in mind when working with metal.

I covered the tin with Perfect Pearls after it had cooled which took away the sticky feel. The areas with thicker coats of beeswax will dent and ding if banged around much. The thinner areas seemed to be just fine.

HTH Cher and anyone else out there making wanting to work with metals!
