Happiness Is.... Art Tag

Today I wanted to share a fun stamp layered card with you.  You can create a card with lots of depth by playing with different color values.  You will notice in the tag I have several lighter and darker shades of blue going on some in the foreground, a few in a "middle" layer and the blues in the very background.  These different values or lightness and darkness of a color.

For this card I started out with a plain manila tag which I had dragged through some Broken China Distress Ink cleaning up my craft mat after dying some seam binding (I'll have more on that in a day or so).  I tried to pick up as much color as I could straight off the mat which I then quickly dried with my heat tool.  I then spritzed the mat with a bit of water to dilute all the ink that was left-over.  I ran the cardstock through the dyed water which created another layer of color in a lighter value than the first generation of inking.

The next step was to stamp the rainbow rick-rack on the lower half of the tag.  I used Hero Arts Shadow Inks for this portion of the card - Pale Tomato, Orange Soda, Soft Yellow, Soft Pool, Soft Sky and Passion Flower in that order.  These colors differ quite a bit from the Distress Inks so this elevates them to a new level of depth in the card.

For the top layer of the card I used Distress Markers - Chipped Sapphire, Stormy Sky and Peeled Paint. I colored the flower centers and the center third of the petals with Stormy Sky then added the Chipped Sapphire on the outer 2/3rds of the petals.  I also added the Peeled Paint to the leaves.  I stamped each "inking" at least 2 or 3 times before I colored them again.  These second and third generation stamped images add their own brand of depth in this upper most layer of stamping.  I re-inked the stamp again and finished stamping the flowers.

Finally I stamped the birds (3x with one inking) and sentiment.  I also added a bit of pen work around the flowers to give them more definition and to help them pop from the background and a couple pen worked frames around the tag for a finishing touch.

By following one or more of these steps you too can create amazing depth without adding one lick of dimension to a card, tag, journal or scrapbook page, etc.

Now it's your turn to get inky!!

  2. What a great tag! Helpful directions, too, for getting more depth without adding bulky layers. I really like the pen work you did at the end. Anne, yourmainestamper

  3. This is totally gorgeous! I can see I'm going to have to play with tags. I love how you did the birds. I also love the rickrack done with the shadow inks. I have Hero Arts Shadow ink on my wishlist. Perhaps some day I'll be able to get inky using some. Thanks for sharing your lovely creation and for taking the time to tell how you made it. Hopefully using the gentle wind here I can send some Spring your way. ~~~~~~~ Spring!

  4. Oh Roni, I love the fact that there are no scrapbook papers and that you used techniques us stampers use, No, nothing wrong with the scrapbook papers, I use them myself. But I started back 30 yrs ago creating background with my rubberstamps and other found items. I enjoy seeing work with our stamps that are used in for the background and focal point. I must and am trying to use my stamps again the way I was using them 30 yrs ago. Love the tag. :)
